LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The UCLA softball coaching staff has been recognized as the NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year, as named by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The Bruin staff, head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez, assistant coaches Lisa Fernandez and Kirk Walker and director of operations Jodie Legaspi-Kiaha, guided UCLA to a 52-8 record in 2014. It marked the most wins for the Bruins since the 2003 season.
The Bruins, who were second in the Pac-12 Conference with a 19-5 record, ranked first nationally in win-loss percentage, fourth in slugging, ninth in batting average and home runs per game, 13th in runs per game and 18th in earned run average.
Two Bruins, Ally Carda and Stephany LaRosa, earned NFCA First Team All-American accolades, with Carda also being named a Top Three finalist for the USA Softball National Player of the Year Award. Carda, who was also the Pac-12 Player of the Year, was one of six Bruins named NFCA All-West Region and nine named to the All-Pac-12 Teams.
It is the second time under Inouye-Perez's tenure that UCLA has earned NFCA CSOY honors. The Bruins were named the National and Regional Coaching Staff of the Year in 2010. As an assistant, Inouye-Perez was a part of the 2004 National CSOY and the 2000 Regional CSOY.
