HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Junior Ally Carda struck out six in five innings and went 3-for-3 at the plate in Saturday's championship game of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, as the 13th-ranked Bruins defeated Hawai'i 4-1 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Bruins improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Rainbow Wahine fall to 3-2. Carda was named the Most Valuable Pitcher of the Tournament, while senior Alyssa Tiumalu, who had a pair of RBI on Saturday, was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Also making the All-Tournament Team for the Bruins were senior Jessica Hall, junior Gracie Goulder, sophomore Mysha Sataraka and freshmen Gabrielle Maurice and Delaney Spaulding.

Carda (2-0) allowed one run, three hits and two walks. She retired the first nine batters of the game, striking out a pair in the first and second innings. Sophomore Paige McDuffee earned her first save of the year, fanning one in two shutout innings and giving up two hits and one walk.

After two and a half scoreless innings, the Bruins got on the board in the third. Carda singled up the middle to start the inning, Spaulding walked and both runners moved up on a foul out by junior Stephany LaRosa. Sataraka followed with a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Carda to make it 1-0.

The Rainbow Wahine tied the game in the top of the fourth. Keiki Carlos singled up the middle, moved to second on a Kayla Wartner sacrifice, to third on a Sharla Kliebenstein fly out and scored on a single up the middle by Leisha Li’ili’I to even the score.

UCLA broke the tie with three in the fifth. Maurice led off with a double to right-center, moved to third on a Carda sacrifice and scored on a single up the middle by Spaulding to make it 2-1. A LaRosa single to right moved Spaulding to second, and after a Sataraka grounder to short moved both runners up, Tiumalu singled through the 3-4 hole on the right side to plate both runners to make it 4-1.

The Bruins host the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament next weekend at Easton Stadium. UCLA plays UC Davis (3:30 p.m.) and Robert Morris (6 p.m.) on Friday, Feb. 14, Western Kentucky (12:30 p.m.) and Robert Morris (3:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 15 and UC Davis (12 p.m.) on Sunday, Feb. 16.
