LOS ANGELES - Juniors Ally Carda and Stephany LaRosa and sophomore Allexis Bennett each had two-hit games, while freshman Gabrielle Maurice hit a three-run homer, as the top-ranked Bruins defeated Utah 8-0 in five innings on Friday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 31-2 overall and 6-1 in Pac-12 play, while the Utes fall to 12-13 and 1-5 in league action.
Along with her two hits, Carda also earned the win in the circle to move to 18-1 on the season, striking out five in five shutout innings and giving up three hits and a walk. She retired the first eight batters of the game, striking out one in every inning. The Bruins had 10 hits, with seven different players recording at least one.
UCLA scored in each of the first three innings. In the first, LaRosa launched her third home run in as many games and seventh of the season over the scoreboard in left to make it 1-0.
In the second, Bennett slapped a one-out single down the left-field line, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a Carda fly out to center. After a walk to freshman Delaney Spaulding, LaRosa singled to right to plate Bennett with UCLA's second run.
After Utah left a pair on base in the third, the Bruins broke it open in the bottom half of the inning with five runs. With one out, sophomore Brittany Moeai and senior Jessica Hall drew back-to-back walks and Maurice followed with her second homer of the season to left-center to make it 5-0.
Bennett then singled up the middle, stole second and came home on Carda's single to left-center to increase the margin to 6-0. Carda advanced to second on the throw to the plate and it would be a key gained base, as Spaulding singled to right to bring in the Bruins' seventh run.
UCLA brought out the mercy rule on one swing to open the fifth, as Carda crushed her fifth homer of the year to right to wrap up an 8-0 victory.
