USA Softball Team Opens Pan Am Play with 9-0 Win
By: UCLA Athletics

July 29, 1999

Winnipeg, Canada - Danielle Henderson threw a perfect game as the USA Women's National Softball Team defeated Colombia 9-0 at John Blumberg Softball Complex in the team's opening game of the 1999 Pan American Games.

"I was thinking about hitting my spots and staying ahead in the count," Henderson said. "It (the perfect game) just happens, especially when you have a defense behind you and a catcher calling a good game. The perfect game is a result of all of that."

USA scored two runs in the top of the first inning as former Bruin Dot Richardson (Orlando, Fla.) led off the game with a single to right-center field. Laura Berg laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Richardson to second. Following a walk to UCLA volunteer assistant coach Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.), Crystl Bustos knocked in Richardson with a single to left-center field and advanced to second on the play. Former Bruin All-American Sheila Cornell Douty (Diamond Bar, Calif.) was intentionally walked to load the bases. With one out, losing pitcher A. Pusey-McLaughlin (COL) walked UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman (LaVerne, Calif.) to score Fernandez and give USA an early 2-0 lead.

USA added three runs in both the third and fourth innings and a single run in the seventh for the 9-0 shutout.

Henderson, who posted her first perfect game in only her second international tournament, struck out 16 batters in the complete game.

USA collected 12 hits, including Fernandez's 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Bustos collected three hits with two RBI, and Leah O'Brien-Amico added two hits with a team-high three RBI. Richardson, Berg, former Bruin Jennifer Brundage (Irvine, Calif.) and UCLA center fielder Christie Ambrosi (Overland Park, Kan.) each added a hit for USA.

Pusey-McLaughlin walked five and struck out five in the complete seven innings.

USA, which has captured the gold medal at the last three Pan American Games, resumes competition against Netherlands Antilles Friday at 8 p.m.
