Winnipeg, Canada - The USA Women's National Softball Team picked up its third shutout in as many games as it defeated Netherlands Antilles, 7-0, at John Blumberg Softball Complex to improve to 3-0 in pool play at the Pan American Games.
"Anytime that your pitchers go out and don't allow any runs, you have to be happy with their performance," USA head coach Ralph Raymond said. "We have had a perfect game, a one-hitter and a three-hitter, so I am pleased with their performances."
Winning pitcher Lori Harrigan (Las Vegas, Nev.) held Netherlands Antilles hitless through four innings and finished the game with nine strikeouts while giving up three hits in the complete-game shutout.
USA scored single runs in the first four innings to take a commanding 4-0 lead. In the first inning, UCLA volunteer assistant coach Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.) drew a two-out walk, and back-to-back singles by Crystl Bustos (Canyon Country, Calif.) and Sheila Cornell Douty (UCLA/Diamond Bar, Calif.) scored Fernandez to give USA its first run of the game.
USA added two runs in the sixth inning as relief pitcher Idellienne Martis entered the game with bases loaded and gave up back-to-back walks. USA also scored in the seventh as Jennifer McFalls (Grand Prairie, Texas) hit a bases-loaded, one-out single to right field to score Shelly Stokes (Sacramento, Calif.).
Designated hitter Natasha Marselia broke up Harrigan's no-hitter with a one-out single in the fifth inning, but Harrigan struck out Emely Jonis and got Messinia Pulger to pop up to end the inning.
Netherlands Antilles got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh as Sherry Howell led off with a single through the left side. Marselia hit a one-out single to center field to put runners at first and second, but Harrigan struck out the next two batters to end the game.
USA collected a total of 11 hits but also left 13 runners stranded. Dot Richardson (UCLA/Orlando, Fla.), McFalls, Bustos, and Douty posted two hits apiece. Douty also added a team-high two RBI.
Judesca Martis took the loss for Netherlands Antilles, giving up eight hits and six runs - five earned - and struck out one in 5.1 innings. Netherlands Antilles falls to 1-3 in pool play.
"I am obviously glad to be 3-0 at this point in the tournament, but our team is still not playing the way they can," Raymond said. "We are still leaving way too many runners on base. We will be able to see where we are when we play a tough Cuba team tonight. We will have to correct this if we expect to defeat teams such as Cuba and Canada."
USA, which has captured the gold medal at the last three Pan American Games, resumes competition tonight against Cuba at 8 p.m.
