Former Bruin Vecchione Returns to UCLA Softball Program
By: UCLA Athletics

June 10, 1999

Former UCLA softball standout Gina Vecchione, an assistant with Oregon State since 1995, has recently been hired as an assistant coach with the 1999 National Champion UCLA softball team.

Vecchione, a three-year letterwinner for the Bruins from 1980-83, will replace current assistant Lisa Fernandez as UCLA's second assistant coach. Fernandez will still maintain her duties on the UCLA coaching staff, however it will be on a volunteer basis, enabling her to fulfill her commitments with USA Softball. Her on the field duties will not be affected.

As a player, Vecchione was a member of UCLA's first NCAA Championship team in 1982, earning All-College World Series honors that same season. She has seen extensive international competition, competing on three U.S. World Championship teams, as well as Team USA's Pan American squad in 1983. Equally as impressive, Vecchione earned seven All-America honors while guiding her ASA team - the Raybestos Brakettes - to seven national championships. In 1997, she was inducted to the National Softball Hall of Fame.

"Gina is one of the greatest players to ever don a UCLA softball jersey," said UCLA head coach Sue Enquist. "We are thrilled that she is returning home and becoming a Bruin again. She will be of great value to UCLA in all facets of the program."

Vecchione earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from UCLA.
