No. 2 Men's Tennis Heads to Houston for National Team Indoors

LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (5-0) heads to one of the most important events of the 2014 season this week, as the Bruins are in Houston, Texas for the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, hosted by Texas A&M. Sixteen teams make up the four-day event, which kicks off on Friday and concludes on Monday. UCLA is seeded No. 2 behind top seed and defending Indoor champion Virginia. The Bruins open up against Pepperdine on Friday at 1:00 p.m. (CST). The winner of that match advances to take on either Illinois or Oklahoma on Saturday at Noon. Note: UCLA was initially supposed to face Duke in the first round however due to poor weather in North Carolina, the Blue Devils were forced to cancel their trip Info.

UCLA at the Indoors
UCLA's seven National Team Indoor tites ranks only behind Stanford's 12. The Bruins have also made the second-most appearances in the final with 10. In all, UCLA has amassed 75 wins at the Indoors since the tournament began in 1973. National Team Indoor History.

Thompson Remains No. 1
UCLA continues to have the No. 1 player in the ITA Singles Rankings, as senior Clay Thompson held on to his top spot when the latest rankings were released on Tuesday. He has been ranked No. 1 since the initial rankings of the new year came out on Jan. 2. Joining Thompson in the top 10 is junior Marcos Giron, who climbed from No. 11 to No. 5 in this edition. Rounding out the singles rankings for UCLA are freshmen Gage Brymer (No. 26) and Mackenzie McDonald (No. 51). Brymer had the most movement this week, as he climbed 94 spaces from No. 120. Giron and McDonald are UCLA's lone doubles team in the national rankings, checking in at No. 9. Rankings: Singles | Doubles

Thompson, Giron Play With the Pros
Senior Clay Thompson and junior Marcos Giron have both played recently played in Challenger events on the ITF Pro Circuit. Giron was the first to play an event, as he missed the season opener against UC Irvine on Jan. 22 because he was competing in the Royal Lahaina Challenger in Maui. After defeating 2013 Kalamazoo runner-up Jared Donaldson, 7-6(3), 6-3 in the first round, Giron fell to former NCAA Champion Bradley Klahn, 7-6(9), 6-0 in the second round. Klahn would go on to win the tournament in Maui. Most recently, Thompson received a wild card to compete in the Challenger of Dallas last week. He fell to two-time NCAA Singles Champion Steve Johnson of USC, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in the opening round. Thompson was the only player to get a set off of Johnson all week, as he would go on to claim the title in Dallas.

Pepperdine, USC Next Up
Following UCLA's trip to the Indoors, the Bruins return home to host local rivals Pepperdine and USC at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA squares off against Pepperdine on Feb. 22 at 2:00 p.m., followed by USC on Feb. 25 at 1:30 p.m. Both matches are free to attend.
