Last Time vs. UVA
The Bruins and Cavaliers played one of the most exciting finals in NCAA Tournament history last year in Champaign, Ill., with the Cavaliers coming away with a dramatic 4-3 victory to claim their program's first NCAA title. The one-loss Bruins were the No. 1 seed in the tournament despite Virginia coming in with an unblemished record. UCLA lost the doubles point but was able to win three matches in singles play before Virginia's Mitchell Frank clinched the win for the Cavaliers at court No. 3.
Bruins Wrap Up Pacific Coast Doubles Championships
Although rain wreaked havoc at the 125th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club this past weekend, the tournament concluded on Sunday with Rice's Gustavo Gonzalez and Bojan Szumanski taking home the crown. UCLA's Joseph Di Giulio and Clay Thompson turned in the best performance for the Bruins at the event, reaching the quarterfinals. Bruins at the BNP Paribas Open
UCLA's Clay Thompson and Marcos Giron both received wild cards to compete in the qualifying draw at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. this week. Former UCLA players Nick Meister and Daniel Kosakowski will also be in the draw, as they both made it through last week's pre-qualifying draw. Qualifying begins on Tuesday. The draw will be posted on Monday night on the BNP Paribas Open Website.
UCLA in the ITA Rankings
Coming off a 5-2 victory over then No. 2 USC last week, UCLA moved up from No. 4 to No. 3 in the new ITA Team rankings released on Tuesday afternoon. The Bruins came in just behind No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 USC. Oklahoma and USC round out the top 5. Individually, Clay Thompson has been ranked No. 1 in the country in singles since the first rankings of the new year came out on Jan. 2. He is joined in the top 10 by Marcos Giron, who checks in at No. 5. Mackenzie McDonald (No. 35), Gage Brymer (No. 74) and Karue Sell (No. 98) are also ranked in singles. Bruins and Bears to Meet on March 12
UCLA hosts another national power next week, as No. 8 Baylor visits the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Wednesday, March 12. That match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. The Bruins took last year's meeting, winning 6-1 in Waco, Texas.
