LOS ANGELES - The No. 12 Baylor men's tennis team managed to pull off the upset at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon, handing third-ranked UCLA just its second loss of the season in the form of a 4-2 victory. It marks the first home loss for the Bruins (11-2) since Feb. 29, 2012.

Things started roughly for the Bruins from the get go, as Baylor (9-4) came out and took a pair of victories to claim the one point awarded for doubles play. All three matches, however, were extremely close and all decided by tiebreakers. After the two teams traded wins at the top two courts, Wednesday's point came down to court No. 3, where Baylor's Diego Galeano and Tony Lupieri outlasted Bruin freshmen Gage Brymer and Mackenzie McDonald, 8-7(2).

After claiming the doubles point, Baylor's confidence grew even greater when the Bears came out and won four of six first sets in singles play. A win by sophomore Karue Sell at court No. 5 was immediately answered when Galeano took a straight-set victory over McDonald at court No. 3, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Bears.

That lead would be extended when Lupieri gave Baylor a 3-1 advantage at court No. 6, where he dispatched of Bruin freshman Joseph Di Giulio, 7-6(3), 6-2.

UCLA, now within a point of dropping the dual match, would get a boost from court No. 4, as Brymer outlasted Mate Zsiga, 6-2, 7-5 to make it 3-2 Baylor. Two matches remained on court at time of Brymer's win and UCLA was going to need to pull out third sets in both matches to get the victory. Fourth-ranked Marcos Giron dropped the first set and was on serve in the second with 15th-ranked Patrick Pradella at court No. 1, while next door at court No. 2, top-ranked Clay Thompson also lost the first set but was down a break in the second against eighth-ranked Julien Lenz. After Thompson held serve for 4-5, Lenz served out the match in the very next game, posting a 7-6(5), 6-4 win to clinch the 4-2 victory for the Bears. Court No. 1 was immediately suspended after Lenz's win.

UCLA has the next 12 days off from competition and will not return to the courts until hosting both Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (10:00 a.m.) and Loyola Marymount (2:30 p.m.) in a double-header on March 25.
