McDonald earned a spot in the main draw in his final qualifying match on Sunday when he downed 100th-ranked Steve Johnson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Johnson is no stranger to Bruin fans, as he was a two-time NCAA Singles Champion at rival USC. McDonald, a wild card, opened up qualifying for the Western & Southern Open on Saturday, beating 77th-ranked Nicolas Mahut of France, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
For his efforts, McDonald earns a meeting with qualifier David Goffin of Belgium in the main draw on Monday at 7:00 p.m. (EST).
McDonald was part of UCLA's stellar 2013 recruiting class, joining two other high-level players in Gage Brymer and Joseph DiGiulio. All three players were participating in the Boys' 18s National Championships, which concluded on Sunday in Kalamazoo, Mich. Brymer and McDonald actually met in the round of 16, with Brymer winning in three sets. Brymer was a semifinalist at the event.
