Friday's doubles point was close, however UCLA was able to edge out the Utes for a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. After both teams traded wins at court Nos. 1 and 2, the point came down to the No. 3 spot, where UCLA's Gage Brymer and Mackenzie McDonald were in a tight battle with Utah's Matt Cowley and Alejandro Medinilla. The Bruin freshmen prevailed in the end, winning the pro set in a tiebreaker 7-5 to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the match.
UCLA had a much easier time with Utah in singles, claiming first sets at all six courts before eventually taking three matches in straight sets. Following wins by Karue Sell (court No. 5) and Brymer (court No. 4), third-ranked Marcos Giron was able to notch the clinching win for the Bruins on Friday, as his 6-3, 6-3 win over Ben Tasevec at court No. 2 gave UCLA the 4-0 victory. After Giron's victory, all remaining matches were suspended.
UCLA's next match is on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz., where the Bruins are scheduled to take on Arizona at Noon.
