Athens, Ga. - With the second day of competition concluded at the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex, a total of five Bruin singles players and one doubles team are still in contention for titles heading into Friday's round of 16.

On the men's side, second-seeded Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald each posted straight-set victories in singles before teaming together for a first-round win in the 32-team doubles draw. Giron will take on hometown favorite Nathan Pasha of Georgia in the round of 16, while McDonald will meet 9-16 seed Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss. Both matches will begin at 11:30 a.m. (EST).

In doubles, Giron and McDonald notched a tight 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-6(6) victory over Harvard's Casey MacMaster and Denis Nguyen in the opening round, setting up a showdown with second-seeded Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese of Tennessee on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The two teams recently met in the round of 16 of the team championships last week. Libietis and Reese were leading the pro set 7-2 when play was suspended after UCLA claimed the doubles point.

The UCLA women had three players advance in singles play on Thursday, getting wins from second-seeded Robin Anderson, eighth-seeded Jennifer Brady and 9-16 seed Chanelle Van Nguyen. Anderson and Brady each won in straight sets, while Van Nguyen was a three-set winner over Yana Koroleva of Clemson, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Kyle McPhillips fell to third-seeded Kristie Ahn of Stanford, 6-4, 6-2.

UCLA had a bit of bad luck in the opening round of doubles play, with both Bruin teams falling upset. Catherine Harrison and McPhillips suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle of Baylor, while top-seeded Anderson and Brady were forced to retire while up 3-0 in the first set against Clemson's Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies. Anderson was treated for a bloody nose after the second game of the match. When it persisted, the Bruin duo was forced to retire following the third game. Anderson is expected to play in Friday's round of 16 of singles.
