Flushing, N.Y. - UCLA women's tennis player Jennifer Brady started strong but was unable to hold on for the victory in her first-round qualifying match at the 2014 U.S. Open on Wednesday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Brady, who received a wild card to compete in the qualifying draw in New York, took the first set 6-2 over Germany's Carina Witthoeft. The Bruin sophomore failed to hold on to that lead, however, as Witthoeft battled back to take the next two sets for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

The loss does not end Brady's participation in New York, as she is slated to compete in the USTA Collegiate Invitational from Sept. 4-6.

More information about the 2014 U.S. Open can be found at the official tournament website www.usopen.org.
