April 19, 2013

LOS ANGELES - Twelve standout UCLA student-athlete alumni and a former Bruin head coach were part of the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section (CIF-SS) "100 Athletes for 100 Years" unveiled at a reception and awards show at the AT&T Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 13.

The list of 100 athletes, beginning from 1905 to the present, represents the inaugural CIF-SS Athletes Hall of Fame.

Among the 12 Bruins who were inducted, nine are also in the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame -baseball's Jackie Robinson (1937 Pasadena Muir); football's Bill Kilmer (1957 Citrus); basketball's Keith Erickson (1961 El Segundo), Jamaal Wilkes (1970 Santa Barbara) and Ann Meyers-Drysdale (1975 Sonora); swimming's Brian Goodell (1977 Mission Viejo); volleyball's Karch Kiraly (1978 Santa Barbara), and softball's Lisa Fernandez (1989 St. Joseph/Lakewood) and Stacey Nuveman (1996 St. Lucy's).

Bruin greats also inducted included track & field's Mike Powell (1981 Edgewood) and Joanna Hayes (1995 J. W. North); basketball's Tracy Murray (1989 Glendora), and former UCLA women's soccer head coach Joy Fawcett (1986 Edison).

Criteria for the selection of these athletes, including participation in a CIF-SS sport at a time during the school's membership, ranged from success at all levels, including high school, collegiate, Olympic and professional.

Female athletes that participated at a CIF-SS high school during the period that the section did not recognize girl's athletics were included. Athletes that now participate in other sections, but competed in the CIF-SS during the time their school was a member of the CIF-SS, were also included.

The committee making the selections consisted of sportswriters, producers, on-air personalities, local historians and past and former members of the CIF-SS staff and Executive Committee. Fox Sports West produced and taped "100 Athletes for 100 Years" reception and awards show for later release.
