The Bruins were ranked 12th in the AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll, which was announced on Monday. UCLA, which was 13th in the final poll of 2012, earned 791 points.
UCLA was the fifth-highest squad among Pac-12 teams. Stanford was third, followed by USC (4th), Washington (5th) and Oregon (8th). The only other conference team receiving votes is California (37th, 16 pts.).
Along with their 10 matchups against the above mentioned five teams, the Bruins also play three other squads that earned votes in the preseason rankings. Hawai'i, UCLA's opponent in Honolulu on Sept. 7, is ranked 11th and Creighton, the Bruins' foe in Denver on Sept. 14, is 25th. Long Beach State, which UCLA travels to on Sept. 18, was in the also receiving votes category.
The Bruins, who have begun fall practice this week, return four starters and 12 letterwinners from a 2012 team which went 23-8, the program’s 14th-straight season with at least 20 wins, and 14-6 in Pac-12 play, which tied for fourth in the league.
