The 12th-ranked Bruins begin the 2013 season this weekend at the Doubletree Los Angeles Westside Invitational at Loyola Marymount. The season opener is Friday against Albany at 4 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion. On Saturday, the Bruins will have matches in the morning and evening, playing North Texas at 10 a.m. and the host Lions at 7 p.m.

The Bruins leave Tuesday for Hawai’i as they travel to the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu. Play begins on Thursday when UCLA faces Santa Clara at 8 p.m. PT. On Friday, the Bruins take on New Mexico State at 8 p.m. PT. The tournament closes on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. PT against 11th-ranked Hawai’i.

UCLA surpassed the 20-win mark for the 14th-straight season in 2012, finishing the campaign with a 23-8 record ... the Bruins were second in the nation in kills per set (14.76) in 2012, third in assists per set (13.84) and fifth in hitting percentage (.295) ... the .295 hitting percentage was the second-best, single-season total in UCLA history ... UCLA surpassed the .500 hitting mark three times last season. Those three totals are the three-highest, single-match hitting percentage totals at UCLA in the rally scoring era (since 2001) ... the Bruins surpassed the .300 hitting plateau 17 times in 2012 and were undefeated when doing so ... UCLA won the hitting percentage battle in all 23 wins last season ... the Bruins were 16-0 when holding their opponent under a .200 hitting percentage ... along with the graduations of First Team All-America Tabi Love (12th in nation in kps - 4.51), Honorable Mention All-America Rachael Kidder (7th in Pac-12 in kps - 3.98) and Bojana Todorovic (8th in Pac-12 in dps - 3.85), the Bruins lose Becca Strehlow (5th in Pac-12 in aps - 10.39), who transferred to Pepperdine. UCLA returns 13 letterwinners and four starters in 2013.

Albany, the 2012 regular-season champions of the America East Conference, returns four letterwinners and three starters from last year’s squad which went 14-15 overall. The top returning hitter for the Great Danes is junior outside hitter Samantha Brostrom, who averaged 2.72 kills and 2.28 digs per set a year ago. In the backcourt, junior libero Viktoriia Stroilo averaged 5.33 dps and added 25 aces. MJ Engstrom is in her sixth season at Albany and holds a record of 102-51. The Bruins have never faced the New York squad on the volleyball court.

North Texas, located in Denton, Texas, returns 12 letterwinners and six starters from last year’s squad which went 26-12 and tied for third in the Sun Belt Conference with a 9-5 mark. The Mean Green make the jump to Conference USA in 2013. North Texas returns a pair of top outside hitters from 2012. Sophomore Carnae Dillard averaged 4.09 kills and 2.19 digs per set to go with 29 aces, while senior Courtney Windham posted 3.11 kps and 1.28 blocks per set. Andrew Palileo, formerly the head coach at Washington State, begins his first season at North Texas. He has a 14-year head coaching record of 272-191. The Bruins and the Mean Green will meet for the first time on Saturday morning.

Loyola Marymount advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2012, going 18-13 overall and 8-8 (T-5th) in the West Coast Conference before losing in the opening round of the NCAA’s. The Lions bring back 11 letterwinners and six starters from last year’s squad, led by senior outside hitter Kathleen Luft, who posted 4.16 kills per set, 1.84 digs per set and 13 aces a year ago. Junior middle blocker Litara Keil posted 3.12 kps, 1.04 blocks per set and 34 aces in 2012. Tom Black is in his fourth season as LMU’s head coach and has a record of 47-44. In eight years of coaching, Black is 162-73. The Bruins lead the all-time series with the Lions 9-1. The last matchup came at LMU on Aug. 27, 2011, as UCLA posted a 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 victory. Kelly Reeves had 11 kills, six digs and five blocks to lead the Bruins. The Bruins have won six in a row in the series, with Loyola Marymount’s lone victory coming at Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 6, 1986 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. UCLA is 4-0 all-time at LMU.
