BRUINS HOST OREGON STATE, OREGON THIS WEEKEND
The Bruins are home this weekend, hosting Oregon State on Friday at 6 p.m. in the first of three matches at the John Wooden Center this season. UCLA then heads down Bruin Walk to Pauley Pavilion on Sunday against Oregon at 1 p.m. The Bruin-Duck tilt will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
The Bruins have their last road trip of the regular season next week, facing third-ranked Washington on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks before taking on Washington State on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins have won 42 straight matches when hitting .300 or better, including four times this season ... UCLA had a season-best eight aces at Oregon State on Oct. 12 and tied a year high with 17 blocks versus the Beavers ... nationally, the Bruins are 29th in kills per set (14.07) and 32nd in assists per set (13.06). Among Pac-12 teams, UCLA is sixth in hitting (.246), aps and kps ... the Bruins are seven wins away from 1,200 for the program’s history ... UCLA is 7-1 when holding its opponent under a .200 hitting percentage ... the Bruins are 9-1 when winning the second set ... UCLA is also 9-1 when winning the battle of the blocks ... senior Kelly Reeves, who made her 100th career start at California last Sunday, is 17 digs away from 1,100 and currently sits 17th on UCLA’s all-time list (1,083). Next up on the list are Jessica Fine (16th, 1,105), Ann Boyer (15th, 1,110), Elaine Youngs (14th, 1,113) and Kristee Porter (13th, 1,119) ... sophomore Karly Drolson has surpassed the 15-dig plateau in five of her last six matches, going over the 20 mark both times last weekend. In Pac-12 play, Drolson is averaging 4.09 dps, which is seventh among league players ... sophomore Maddy Klineman has posted double figures in kills in four straight matches, averaging 3.18 kps during that stretch. Klineman also has 12 blocks during that span, including a career-high six at Cal ... junior Megan Moenoa has surpassed 50 digs in each of the last three matches, going for 52 against Washington State (Oct. 26) and Stanford (Nov. 1) and a career-best 68 at Cal. She was one dig shy versus the Cardinal of having three straight double-doubles, adding 11 digs versus the Cougars and 13 against the Bears ... senior Mariana Aquino made her 100th career start against California and has at least five kills in seven straight contests. She also has an ace in three straight, giving her 13 on the season, which is second on the team ... junior Zoë Nightingale has taken over the team lead in bps thanks to posting at least three blocks in eight straight matches. Nightingale had a season-best nine the last time she met Oregon State on Oct. 12 and had seven in her last contest at Cal ... sophomore Rachel Inouye set career highs in digs in consecutive contests last weekend, recording 12 at Stanford and 13 at California. She also had an ace versus the Golden Bears to give her four on the season ... junior Karsta Lowe has double figures in kills in 21 of 22 matches, having reached the 15-kill mark seven straight times and the 20-kill plateau in four in a row. She also picked up the second double-double of her career at Stanford with 22 kills and 14 digs.
SCOUTING THE OREGON STATE BEAVERS
Oregon State (9-14) remains in search of its first Pac-12 win, having dropped the first dozen of its conference schedule. Last weekend, the Beavers fell at home in four to Arizona State and in three to Arizona. Oregon State is hitting .186 as a team, averaging 12.40 kills, 0.95 aces, 14.58 digs and 2.05 blocks per set. Four players are averaging over 2.00 kps, led by freshman Lila Toner’s 2.82. Junior Laura Schaudt is second with 2.53 kps, junior Amanda Brown is third at 2.03 kps and junior Arica Nassar is fourth with 2.01 kps and first with 1.16 bps. Junior Tayla Woods is handling the setting duties and is posting 9.98 assists per set. Senior Becky Defoe is first in dps (4.45) and aces (17).
THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. BEAVERS
UCLA escaped with a five-set victory in the first meeting between the two teams this season on Oct. 12 in Corvallis (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-11). Karsta Lowe led the Bruins with 18 kills, Claire Felix added 14 kills, while Kelly Reeves recorded eight kills, 10 digs and six blocks. The Bruins lead the all-time series 52-3, having won 11 in a row, and are 25-2 in Westwood against the Beavers. Oregon State has won just seven sets during its 11-match losing streak. The Beavers’ most recent victory in the series and in Westwood was in five sets on Oct. 12, 2007.
SCOUTING THE OREGON DUCKS
Oregon, which plays at USC on Friday, brings a 13-9 overall record and a 6-6 Pac-12 mark into this week’s action. The Ducks split last weekend at home, defeating Arizona in five while losing to Arizona State in four. Oregon is hitting .238 as a team, averaging 14.72 kills, 1.09 aces, 16.76 digs and 2.19 blocks per set. Four players are averaging over 2.00 kps, led by 4.41 for junior Liz Brenner, who is also second with 3.12 dps. Senior Ariana Williams is second with 3.03 kps and first with 0.96 bps, sophomore Martenne Bettendorf is third at 2.75 kps and sophomore Canace Finley is fourth with 2.50 kps. Senior Lauren Plum handles the setting duties and is averaging 10.31 assists per set. Freshman Amanda Benson is first on the squad with 4.60 dps and 13 aces.
THE MATCHUP: BRUINS VS. DUCKS
The Bruins dropped a four-set decision in Eugene on Oct. 11 (25-17, 21-25, 17-25, 23-25). Kelly Reeves had a double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs, Karly Drolson added 13 digs and Megan Moenoa posted 29 assists and nine digs. UCLA leads the all-time series with Oregon 51-8 and is 28-1 at home against the Ducks, having won the last three. Oregon’s only victory in Westwood was a five-set triumph on Oct. 1, 2008.
