Women's Volleyball Comes Up Short Against No. 8 USC
By: UCLA Athletics

October 2, 1998

Box Score

Los Angeles - Despite a 20-kill performance from Bruin freshman Ashley Bowles, the UCLA women's volleyball team couldn't manage an upset of No. 8 USC Friday night, falling 15-9, 9-15, 15-3, 15-6 at USC's North Gym.

Bowles, who registered her seventh consecutive double-figure kill outing Friday, also led the Bruins with a .472 attack percentage. She was followed closely in kills by fellow freshman Kristee Porter, who recorded her seventh double-digit kill outing of the season, finishing with 19.

After dropping game one 15-9, UCLA bounced back in game two, going on a 7-0 run midway through the game for a 14-6 advantage. Following the Bruin rally, UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski was issued a yellow card for arguing an alleged USC rotation violation. The Trojans responded, scoring three-straight points before the Bruins finished out the game 15-9.

UCLA's momentum carried into game three as it took the first three points for an early 3-0 lead. The Trojans, however, went on a run of their own, winning 15-straight points to take the game 15-3.

Game three would prove to be the deciding factor as the Bruins never managed to regain the form they had in game two. USC, powered by a match-high 27 kills from Jennifer Kessy, handily took game four 15-6, taking the match 3-1.

A very noisy crowd of 1,079 showed up to watch the cross-town rivals do battle in the first of two scheduled meetings this season. The Trojans visit Pauley Pavilion on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Also contributing for UCLA was freshman setter Erika Selsor, who registered her sixth 50-plus assist outing of the season, finishing with 51.

With the loss, UCLA falls to 3-8 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10, while USC improves to 9-3 and 4-1 in conference play.

Next up for UCLA will be a pair of conference matches against the Arizona schools next weekend. The Bruins take on Arizona on Friday, October 9 in Tucson, then travel to do battle with Arizona State on Sunday, October 11.
