WESTWOOD, Calif. - It was a tale of two halves for the UCLA women's basketball team. The Bruins let Cal State Fullerton jump out to a 17-6 lead to start the game but rallied to take the lead 34-33 at the half. After the intermission, though, it was all UCLA. The Bruins outscored the Titans 60-31 in the second half to roll to a 94- 64 victory at Pauley Pavilion.
Fullerton opened the game with a 7-0 streak to take a 7-0 lead as UCLA missed its first six shots. The Titans opened the lead to as much as 11 (17-6) at the 12:43 mark when Nieshia Cleveland hit a jumper. But the Bruins went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 17-13. Two Erica Gomez free throws with 41 seconds to go in the half gave UCLA its first lead at 32-31, and UCLA took a 34-33 advantage at the break despite shooting just 32.5% in the half. What kept the Bruins in the game at the half were Fullerton's 16 turnovers.
The second half was all UCLA. The Bruins scored the first nine points of the half to go up 43-33 on a Gomez layup. But UCLA wasn't finished. The Bruins scored 18 points before Fullerton even made a field goal, and UCLA ended up with a 33-5 run to lead 65-36. UCLA had as much as a 34 point lead (90-56) with a little over two minutes to play.
Gomez, Janae Hubbard and Marie Philman took over for UCLA in the second half. Gomez scored eight of her 12 points and five of her 11 assists in the second stanza. Philman scored 10 of her 12 points, and Hubbard had nine points (14 overall) and seven rebounds (16 overall) in the second half. The Bruins shot 57.5% in the second half, compared to 28.9% by Fullerton.
Five Bruins ended up in double-figure scoring. Maylana Martin led the Bruins with 16 points. Hubbard threw in 14, and Philman, Gomez and Carly Funicello poured in 12 apiece. Gomez (12 points/11 assists) and Hubbard (14 points/16 rebounds) each had double-doubles. Gomez has now totaled 10+ assists in four of her last five games. Hubbard has pulled down double-figure rebounds for the second consecutive game.
Andrea Thieme led Fullerton with 16 points. Kristina Naumovic had 11, and Erin Whiteside totaled 10 with 13 rebounds. The Titans outrebounded the Bruins 49-46.
