LOS ANGELES - The No. 20 ranked UCLA women's volleyball team evened its record at 10-10 overall and improved to 9-4 in league play by defeating Arizona State University (15-13, 16-14, 15-4) in a Pac-10 Conference match at Pauley Pavilion tonight. ASU fell to 10-11 overall and 7-7 in conference action. The Bruins have now won seven of their last eight matches.
The Bruins scored the first two points of the match, but then allowed the Sun Devils to go on an 8-1 run to build an 8-3 ASU lead. UCLA rallied for the next two points, but ASU regrouped and went ahead 13-9. UCLA rallied to tie the score at 13 all and went ahead on a kill by Amy Nihipali, then capitalized on ASU errors to seal the win.
In the second game, ASU took a 10-6 lead but the Bruins rallied back behind three straight blocks by Nihipali to give the Bruins their first lead at 11-10. The score remained tight the rest of the way and was tied at 14 all, when the Bruins again took control and Nihipali teamed with Ashley Bowles to block for the final point. The Bruins took off from a 2-2 tie and never looked back in the final game en route to their fourth sweep of the season.
Three Bruins again reached double figures tonight as freshman sensation Kristee Porter led the way with 19 kills. Classmate Bowles followed closely with 18 kills and served a pair of aces. Leading the team in hitting percentage was sophomore Elisabeth Bachman who hit .370 with 12 kills and also added seven blocks, including three solo. Also contributing with eight blocks at key points and eight kills was Nihipali. Freshman setter Erika Selsor provided 50 assists and senior Chaska Potter led the team with 12 digs.
ASU was led by sophomore Amanda Burbridge who totaled 15 kills and a match- high 17 digs. Freshman Jami Coughlin added 13 kills for the Sun Devils. Senior Shawna Vanley provided a team-high five blocks. Junior setter Jolynn Faatulu provided 44 assists.
Both UCLA and ASU play again on Sunday at 1 p.m. UCLA entertains Arizona in the John Wooden Center, while ASU plays at USC's North Gym.
