By: UCLA Athletics

October 19, 1998

Los Angeles - UCLA freshman outside hitter Kristee Porter (Tyler, Texas) was named the Pac-10 Conference and AVCA National Player of the Week today. The Porter-powered Bruins won three matches last week, including a five-game upset of No. 4 ranked UC Santa Barbara, and regained a spot (No. 25) in the national rankings.

For the week, Porter hit .321 and recorded 80 kills, 39 digs, five blocks and four aces. She averaged 6.67 kills, 3.25 digs and .42 blocks per game in 12 games played. Against the Gauchos, Porter tallied career-highs with 38 kills and 24 digs to go along with two blocks an ace and a .412 hitting percentage. She had 22 kills, six digs, two blocks and a .279 hitting percentage in a four-game victory over Washington, and finished the week with 20 kills, nine digs and three aces in a three-game win over Washington State. The victories over the Washington schools marked the first time since 1995 the Bruins defeated both the Huskies and Cougars in one weekend.

Porter leads the UCLA squad in kills (290) and kills per game (4.75) while ranking second in digs (141). She ranks third in the Pac-10 in kills per game with a 4.75 average.

Her 38 kills against UC Santa Barbara is the second highest single-match total at UCLA, just five shy of four-time AVCA All-American Natalie Williams' record of 43. She also posted 24 digs in the UCSB match to become only the fifth player in UCLA history to record over 30 kills and 20 digs in the same match and the only freshman in that prestigious club.

Porter becomes just the second freshman to earn AVCA Division I National Player of the Week honors, Stanford's Kerri Walsh earned the honor in 1995 during her freshman campaign.

UCLA is on the road in its next action, traveling to the state of Oregon for matches on Friday and Sunday. The Bruins' match at Oregon State on Friday will be televised live by Fox Sports Net.
