LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's basketball team, ranked No. 14 by Associated Press, won its first game of the year Sunday afternoon, defeating West Virginia, 91-76, at Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins (1-2, with the two losses at Notre Dame and at home against Connecticut), were led by pre-season first-team All-America forward Maylana Martin. The junior scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds. Center Janae Hubbard added 18 points, making seven of 10 shots from the floor, and Marie Philman came off the bench to make seven of 11 shots en route to 17 points.

Freshman guard Michelle Greco added 12 points and eight rebounds and point guard Erica Gomez, who also earned pre-season All-America recognition, had 10 assists, eight points and six rebounds.

West Virginia (1-2) was led by guard Rebecca Burbridge, who scored a game-high 27 points and added nine rebounds. She made seven of 14 shots from three-point range and West Virginia set a UCLA opponent record with 12 three-point field goals. Guard Mandy Ronay added 14 points.

UCLA led 42-34 at the half and built the lead to 22 points (68-46) with 8:49 remaining. WVU cut the lead to 11 (74-63) with 5:20 remaining but UCLA expanded it to 20 (84-64) with 2:41 remaining thanks to a 10-1 spurt.

The Bruins shot 46.6% from the floor and held WVU to just .338 on its field goal attempts. The Bruins also outrebounded the Mountaineers, 57-40.

UCLA is off until Friday, when it plays in the first round of the Hawaii Tournament in Honolulu, HI. West Virginia is at UC Irvine on Tuesday.
