UCLA Inks Two Women's Volleyball Recruits For 1999
By: UCLA Athletics

February 5, 1999

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's volleyball program has received national letters of intent from two outstanding student-athletes who will join the Bruins for the 1999 season. Head coach Andy Banachowski, the first women's collegiate coach inducted into the national Volleyball Hall of Fame, welcomes the addition of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ella Harley (Santa Cruz, Calif.) to the Bruins.

Both are high school All-Americans and listed among Student Sports magazine's top players in the nation. They will both contribute as outside hitters at UCLA, joining a talented corps of hitters led by 1998 Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year and All-District selection Kristee Porter and All-Freshman choice Ashley Bowles, who were both also named First Team All-Pac- 10.

A 6-2 outside hitter from Carlsbad High School, Fendrick is a three-sport athlete in high school also competing in basketball and softball. She earned all-league honors in all three sports as a senior and was named All-CIF in volleyball and softball. A true student-athlete, Fendrick was named the San Diego Union-Tribune's All-Academic Team Captain after carrying a 4.8 GPA in 1998 and was selected All School Scholar Athlete after her junior year. She competes for Club Strictly Volleyball and was a member of the U.S. Youth National Team as a 16-year-old this past summer. "Lauren is a very good athlete with a powerful arm," said coach Banachowski. "She is strong, and her strength is one of her greatest assets."

Harley is a 6-0 hitter who played middle hitter at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose. She helped guide her team to the sectional finals as a senior, receiving numerous honors. Harley will graduate from Santa Cruz High this spring. She competes for City Beach volleyball club, the same team for which current UCLA setter Erika Selsor played. Coach Banachowski called her "a smooth, athletic player with excellent jumping ability."

The Bruins only graduate two seniors from a team that reached the second round in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Completing their UCLA careers in 1998 were opposite hitter Chaska Potter and defensive specialist Mandi Lawson.
