Kristee Porter Named Second-Team AVCA All-American

Dec. 15, 1999

HONOLULU - UCLA sophomore Kristee Porter was among the 24 players named All-Americans on Wednesday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Porter was a second-team honoree, and the first Bruin to earn national AVCA All-America notice since Kara Milling was selected to the second team in 1997.

This honor concludes an impressive sophomore campaign for Porter who, on Oct. 29, became the second-fastest player in NCAA history to reach 1,000 career kills, doing so in the 50th match of her career. She currently has 1,197 career kills through two seasons as a Bruin, good for 14th on UCLA's all-time list.

In UCLA's Central Regional Semifinal match against Pepperdine on Dec. 9, Porter hit .400 with 31 kills, and jump served the Bruins to eight straight points during their comeback. UCLA recovered from a 14-0 deficit en route to a 17-15 game three win and a 3-0 victory over the Waves.

In 1999 NCAA Tournament play, Porter averaged 7.50 kills per game with 90 kills, 31 errors and 177 total attacks for a .333 hitting percentage. Her 31 kills against Pepperdine tied the UCLA record for kills in a three-game match (Natalie Williams, 12/17/92 vs. Florida), and gave Porter seven 30-kill matches for her career, more than the previous Bruin best of six held by Williams and Liz Masakayan.

UCLA finished 28-4 overall and as Pac-10 co-champions with Stanford. The Bruins advanced to the Central Regional Final, where their season ended with a loss to Penn State in University Park., Pa.
