Bruins Drop Four-Game Match at Hawaii Late Saturday Night

HONOLULU - The 10th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team (5-1) lost its first match of the 2005 campaign on Saturday night at No. 7 Hawai'i, falling 30-24, 25-30, 24-30, 26-30. UCLA had three players with double-figure kills, led by freshman Kaitlin Sather with 21, Nana Meriwether with 16 and Rachell Johnson with 17.

UCLA hit .348 in its 30-24 first-game win, recording 19 kills on 46 attempts with just three errors. It was the best attack percentage in a game for the Bruins on the night, as they went on to hit .163, .207 and .208 in the remaining games.

The Bruins out-blocked Hawai'i by a 14-11 margin and out-dug the Rainbow Wahine 62-58, but gave away 14 points on service errors, 11 on blocking errors and two on ball-handling errors in the match. By contrast, the host Rainbow Wahine had seven service errors, three blocking errors and two ball-handling errors in the match.

Both Nana Meriwether and Katilin Sather were named to the Waikiki Beach Marriott Challenge All-Tournament Team. They were joined by Cincinnati's Melissa Zenz, Darla Donaldson of Cal State Northridge and Kanoe Kamana'o, Juliana Sanders and Victoria Prince of Hawai'i. Prince was named the Tournament MVP.

UCLA returns to action on Friday night in Madison, Wis., for the InnTowner Invitational. UCLA will play Valparaiso, Villanova and host Wisconsin in the three-day tournament. The final match of the weekend, UCLA at Wisconsin, will be televised live by CSTV as part of their "Sunday Night Spikes" series on Sunday, Sept. 18,
