The injury-riddled UCLA women's volleyball team had a rough start to its Pac-10 schedule last weekend, dropping its first two conference matches to the Bay Area schools. The Bruins look to rebound this Friday night in a Lexus Gauntlet match-up against cross-town rival USC, a match that takes place on the second day of classes at UCLA and also marks the Bruins home opener for the 2005 women's volleyball season. The Women of Troy also experienced a rough start to the 2005 Pac-10 season by going 0-2 against California and Stanford last weekend. USC enters Friday night's match with a season record under .500

No. 19 USC (4-6, 0-2 Pac-10) • Lexus Gauntlet Match
Like the Bruins, the Women of Troy opened Pac-10 play with a pair of losses last weekend, a three-game defeat to No. 3 Stanford and a five-game loss at California. USC is coached by Mick Haley, who is in his fifth season with the Women of Troy. Although UCLA holds a 50-44 advantage in the all-time series between the two cross-town rivals, the Women of Troy have had the advantage recently, winning the last nine meetings. The match-ups at USC's Lyon Center have not been as close as contests held in Westwood at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, where UCLA lost to the Women of Troy in five games on Nov. 12 of last year

The Lexus Gauntlet: UCLA vs. USC
Friday's match will assign the first five points for the 2005-06 athletic year. The Bruins won the award last year (2004-05) by the largest margin of victory in Gauntlet history, as well as bringing home the trophy for the 2002-03 year. Meanwhile, USC was presented with the inaugural award following the 2001-02 athletic year and won the trophy following the 2003-04 season. Women's Volleyball accounts for 10 points in the Gauntlet standings. There are a total of 110 points available, distributed over 18 sports. Banachowski Nears 1,000th Victory
Entering the InnTowner Invitational with a career record of 991-259 (.793), UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski needs just nine more wins to become the first Collegiate Women's Volleyball head coach with 1,000 career wins. In his 39th season on the Bruin bench, Banachowski trails only UCLA men's coach Al Scates for wins by a collegiate volleyball coach. Banachowski was an All-America setter for Scates during his collegiate career at UCLA. (Scates holds a career record of 1109-200.) The first women's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Mass., Banachowski has coached the Bruins to six national championships, including three NCAA titles.
