LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's volleyball team has signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Andy Banachowski announced today.

Krystal McFarland, a 5-9 setter from Venture, Calif., was a four-year starter at Buena High School, where as a senior she was a team captain and earned first-team All-Channel League honors. She was first-team All-CIF as a junior, and her Renegades Club Volleyball team finished fifth at Junior Nationals in July of 1999, where she was named an All-American setter.

"Krystal will be a second setter to compete with Erika [Selsor]," said Banachowski. "In addition to her abilities as a setter, she can play other positions. She can dig, pass, hit, and do whatever we need her to do."

Cira Wright, a 4.0 student at Kennedy High School, was named her team's MVP as a junior and senior, and is a three-time first-team All-League selection. The 6-0 middle blocker from LaPalma, Calif., earned Kennedy's Scholar-Athlete Award last year, and has been nominated for the school's 1999-2000 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

"Cira will be a good addition to the program," said Banachowski. "She is an athletic middle blocker who will have time to learn our system behind our returning middle blockers. She has good lateral quickness, and can jump and react well."

Both players currently play their club volleyball for Asics Nova, although they compete with different teams within the club. The Bruins return all six starters from the 1999 Pac-10 Championship and NCAA Central Regional runner-up team, which lost to eventual NCAA champion Penn State in the round of eight to end their season.
