After a narrow escape in Saturday night's five-game win over host Nevada at the Sands Regency/SBC Tournament, UCLA now makes its annual trip to the Hawaiian Islands to compete in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Challenge in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Bruins will face off against Cal State Northridge, Cincinnati and the host Rainbow Wahine. Juniors Colby Lyman and Nana Meriwether were both named to the Sands/SBC All-Tournament team with Lyman being tabbed for MVP honors.

Cal State Northridge (2-4)
Cal State Northridge travels to the Islands after defeating then-No. 25 Pepperdine in Malibu last weekend around losses to No. 22 Colorado State and Northern Iowa. The Matadors are coached by Jeff Stork, who is in his third year at Cal State Northridge. UCLA leads the all-time series by a 30-5 margin with UCLA winning the most recent meeting, a 3-1 win in the Matadome on Sept. 1, 2004.

Cincinnati (1-2)
Cincinnati opened its season last weekend with a 1-2 record at the New Mexico State Tournament, posting a three-game win over Texas-Pan American before falling to Tulsa and host New Mexico State. The Bearcats are coached by UCLA graduate Reed Sunahara, who is in his fifth year as the head coach at Cincinnati. UCLA won the only previous meeting between the two teams, a 3-0 win on Sept. 18, 1999 at the Kent Invitational in Kent, Ohio.

Hawai'i (2-4)
Once again, the Bruins will make their annual trip to the Hawaiian Islands and will face off against No. 7 Hawai'i for the 62nd time on Saturday night. Hawai'i enters this weekend's tournament with a 2-3 record, having lost both matches at the AVCA/NACWAA Showcase in Omaha, Neb., then going 2-1 at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic last weekend at the Sheriff Center. Head coach Dave Shoji's Rainbow Wahine lead the all-time series with the Bruins by a 33-28 margin, including a classic five-game victory over UCLA at last season's Mauna Loa Volleyball Challenge (Sept. 11, 2004).

Banachowski Nears 1,000th Victory
Entering the 2005 campaign with a career record of 987-255, UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski needs just 13 more wins to become the first Collegiate Women's Volleyball head coach with 1,000 career wins. In his 39th season on the Bruin bench, Banachowski trails only UCLA men's coach Al Scates, for whom Banachowski was a setter during his collegiate career, in career victories in college volleyball coaching. (Scates holds a career record of 1109-200.) The first women's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, MA, Banachowski enters the season with a career record of 987-255 (.795), and has coached the Bruins to six national championships, including three NCAA titles.
