EUGENE, ORE. - Junior middle blocker Nana Meriwether had a match for the record books on Friday night in Eugene, Ore., as UCLA won a five-game marathon match over Oregon, 33-35, 30-15, 24-30, 30-16, 15-12. Meriwether had 15 kills and 16 blocks in the match, setting new UCLA records for blocks in an five-game match and tying a school record for solo blocks in a match with eight.
With the victory, UCLA improves to 13-8 (6-6 Pac-10), while Oregon falls to 11-13 (1-12).
UCLA held an early lead in the first game of the match, but Oregon came back with a four-point run to close the gap to 21-19 and came back to tie the game at 26-all, forcing the Bruins into their second timeout of the game. From that point, the Ducks and Bruins played even. UCLA had its last lead at 33-32 before a service error tied the game and a Bruin attack error paired with an Erin Little kill gave the Ducks the opening game victory.
Kaitlin Sather led the Bruins in the opening game with eight kills while Katie Carter checked in with six. Meriwether had just one solo block and one block assist in the game, while freshman setter Nellie Spicer had both of her two service aces in game one.
UCLA took an early lead at 3-2 in game two and never looked back, sprinting to a 30-15 game win and sending the teams to the locker room tied at one game apiece. Meriwether led the way for the Bruins in the second game, downing four kills on seven swings for a .571 attack percentage while putting down three solo blocks and four block assists in the game.
Game three was another tightly fought battle with the teams tied at 20-all before Oregon put together two long scoring runs with just one Bruin point to break them up, giving the Ducks a 28-21 lead. UCLA could not recover, and the Ducks won the third game by a 30-24 margin. The Bruins had a negative team attack percentage for the third game.
Down two games to one, UCLA had another impressive performance in game four, hitting .302 as a team and holding the Ducks to a .000 team attack percentage. Sather connected on three service aces in the game, while Meriwether and Katie Carter had four kills apiece to lead the Bruins offensively.
Oregon took an early lead in the fifth and deciding game, up 10-7 before UCLA ripped off four straight points to take an 11-10 lead. Oregon would tie the match at 11 before the Bruins took the lead for good, going on to win 15-12. Meriwether had two solo blocks and Nancy Barba had one in the deciding game, as Barba connected on three kills in the Bruins win.
Three Bruins finished with double-figure kills, led by Sather with 17. Meriwether added 15 kills on 29 attacks with two errors for a .448 attack percentage in addition to her record night on the block, while Katie Carter had 13 kills and seven blocks, three solo and four assists.
UCLA Returns to action on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion with a 7 pm start against Washington State.
