RENO, Nev. - The 13th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team won its 2005 season opener on Friday evening at the Sands/SBC Tournament in Reno, Nev., defeating Eastern Kentucky with scores of 30-21, 31-29, 30-19. Sophomore outside hitter Rachell Johnson led the Bruins with 18 kills in the match while freshman Kaitlin Sather also had double-figure kills in the match, checking in with 12.
The Bruins hit .325 in the opening game of the match, downing 19 kills on 40 attacks with six errors. After hitting just .182 in game two, the Bruins rallied to hit .429 as a team in the third and final game of the match, recording 20 kills on 35 attempts with five errors.
Junior transfer Brenn Larson and freshman Nellie Spicer split duties at setter, each earning 26 assists in the match. Freshman Jordan Smith led the team in digs with 13 on the evening, while the team's lone senior, Nancy Barba, led the Bruins in blocks with four block assists. Barba finished with 11.0 points in the match, adding nine kills those four block assists.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday with two matches, a 10 am contest against No. 18 San Diego, followed by a 7 pm match against host Nevada.
