Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 10th-ranked Bruins fell in four sets to Arizona State on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. Set scores were 26-28, 19-25, 26-24, 20-25. Senior Dicey McGraw (16 kills, 10 digs) and sophomore Bojana Todorovic (11 kills, 20 digs) each had double-doubles.

The Bruins drop to 13-5 overall and 3-4 in Pac-10 play, while the Sun Devils improve to 8-11 and 3-5 in league action.

Sophomore Rachael Kidder (15) and junior Katie Camp (10) were also in double figures in kills. Junior Lainey Gera recorded 29 digs, while freshman Madie Smith had 53 assists. The Bruins hit .175 for the match.

The Bruins led for nearly the entire opening set, but succumbed to a late Arizona State rally to drop the first. The early part of the set featured nine ties. Even at 11, the Bruins got two free points on Arizona State service and attack errors to go up 13-11. UCLA maintained a two-point edge at 17-15 when it scored three straight on back-to-back kills by McGraw and a kill from Todorovic to take a set-best lead of five at 20-15.

UCLA still led by four at 22-18, but Arizona State scored three of the next four to cut its deficit to two at 23-21. An ASU attack error gave the Bruins a set point at 24-21, but the Sun Devils rallied with the next four to go ahead 25-24 and earn a set point of their own. Following an ASU service error, the Sun Devils sided out to get a second set point, but the home squad committed another serving miscue to even the score at 26. However, Arizona State came back with the next two points to post a 28-26 victory. McGraw had six kills in the first, while Camp and Todorovic added four apiece. Gera notched 10 digs and Todorovic recorded seven, as the Sun Devils out-hit the Bruins .238 to .207.

The Bruins scored two of the first three points of the second, but surrendered the next five and never led for the rest of the set. Down 6-2, UCLA came back with five of the next seven to cut its deficit to one. Kills from McGraw and freshman Kelly Reeves, a combo block by Reeves and junior Sara Sage and two ASU errors made it 8-7 in favor of the home team. However, Arizona State came back with the next three to go back up by four at 11-7. The Bruins could get no closer than two the rest of the way and went on to lose the set 25-19. McGraw and Todorovic paced the Bruins with three kills each, as the Bruins were out-hit .194 to .026.

The third set was the opposite of the first, as the Sun Devils led throughout until a late UCLA rally pushed the match to a fourth. After dropping the first point of the set, Arizona State came back with six of the next seven to go up 6-2. The Bruins responded with back-to-back Kidder kills and an ASU attack error to get to within one at 6-5, but the Sun Devils recorded six of the next nine to go back ahead by four at 12-8. Trailing 15-12, the Bruins notched three in a row on two kills from Camp and a Camp/McGraw combo block to even the score for the first time since 1-all.

The Bruins tied it again at 16, 19 and 20, but were unable to get the lead, as it looked like the Sun Devils were going to finish off the sweep after taking a 23-20 advantage. Kills from Todorovic and Kidder made it 23-22, but ASU sided out to earn a pair of match points. However, the Sun Devils committed a service error followed by an attack error to even the score at 24. A McGraw kill gave the Bruins a set point and she followed that with a stuff block to send the visitors to a 26-24 triumph. Kidder had eight kills in the third, Camp added four and McGraw and Todorovic posted three apiece. Gera had nine digs and Todorovic added seven, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .234 to .091.

The Bruins again started off slow to open the fourth, dropping the first four points, but came back with the next three on an ASU service error and consecutive Sage aces to make it 4-3. Trailing 9-7, UCLA scored the next three on back-to-back kills from McGraw and one by Sage to take its first lead of the set at 10-9. The Sun Devils responded with four of the next five to go back ahead by two at 13-11.

UCLA tied it again at 13, 14 and 15-all, but Arizona State stormed back with the next five to go ahead 20-15. The teams split the final 10 points of the match, as the Sun Devils posted a 25-20 victory. Kidder had five kills in the fourth, while McGraw added four. The Bruins were out-hit in the fourth .344 to .200.

The Bruins begin a four-match homestand next weekend starting with contests against Oregon State on Friday and #17 Oregon on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and Gametracker, free audio and free video will be available at UCLABruins.com.
