BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Dicey McGraw had a career-high 24 kills and junior Lauren Van Orden (60 assists, 13 digs) and sophomore Bojana Todorovic (14 kills, 10 digs) each posted double-doubles, but the 10th-ranked Bruins fell in five sets on Saturday at second-ranked California. Set scores were 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 14-16.

The Bruins fall to 17-7 overall and 7-6 in league play, while the Golden Bears move to 21-2 and 11-2 in league action.

Sophomore Rachael Kidder was also in double figures in kills with 14, adding six blocks. Junior Lainey Gera (15) and freshmen Meg Norton (12) and Kelly Reeves (10) each had double figures in digs. Junior Katie Camp added nine kills, while freshman Mariana Aquino posted seven. The Bruins hit .241 for the match.

California jumped out to an early lead, scoring four of the first five points of the match. The Bruins came back with four of the next six on two kills by Camp and one apiece from McGraw and Van Orden to cut their deficit to one at 6-5. UCLA still trailed 8-6 before scoring four of five to take its first lead of the match at 10-9. A Reeves kill and a combo block by Aquino and Kidder evened things at eight. After a Cal sideout, Aquino netted a kill and a bad Bear set gave the Bruins a one-point edge.

The Bruins maintained an 11-10 lead when the Golden Bears recorded three in a row to go back up 13-11. After a UCLA sideout, Cal came back with another 3-0 run to go up by four at 16-12. The Bears would not trail for the rest of the set. UCLA got to within a pair at 17-15, but Cal responded with the next five and seven of eight to take a commanding 24-16 advantage, as the home team went on to take the opener 25-18. The Bears out-hit the Bruins .433 to .290. Kidder had four kills and two blocks in the first, while Reeves added three kills.

The Bears again had an early lead to start set two, scoring the first three points. The Bruins rallied with five of the next seven to even it at 5-all. Aquino had two kills during the run, Camp and Kidder had one each and Reeves posted an ace. After a Cal sideout, back-to-back Bear attack errors gave the Bruins their first lead of the set at 7-6. UCLA still led 8-7, but Cal reeled off four in a row and six of seven to take a set-best lead of four at 13-9. Down 14-10, the Bruins rallied back with the next four on consecutive kills by Todorovic, a Kidder solo block and an Aquino ace.

UCLA still found themselves down 20-18, but tallied six in a row to earn a set point. Three successive kills by McGraw put the Bruins up 21-20, which was followed by an Aquino/Todorovic combo block. Back-to-back Van Orden aces then made it 24-20. Cal staved off the first two UCLA set points, but the third time was the charm, as a Todorovic kill gave the Bruins a 25-22 victory. McGraw had six kills in the second, while Todorovic added four kills, five digs and a block. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .379 to .323.

The start of the third set had a familiar feel, as the Golden Bears posted six of the first eight points. The Bruins came back with four of five on kills by Van Orden, Camp, Aquino and McGraw to cut their deficit to one at 7-6, but Cal brought its lead back up to three at 9-6 and 11-8. The home squad still led 14-12 before the Bruins came back with two in a row on kills by Camp and McGraw to tie the score at 14. Cal sided out the next point, but successive kills by McGraw put the Bruins on top for the first time at 16-15.

Cal sided out to even the score at 16, but four in a row on a Bear attack error, a kill by McGraw and two in a row from Todorovic gave the Bruins a 20-16 advantage. The Golden Bears closed to within two at 21-19 and 22-20, but a Cal service error and a Todorovic ace gave the Bruins a 24-20 lead and a set point. Cal saved the first attempt, but a Camp/Kidder combo block pushed UCLA to a 25-21 triumph. McGraw and Todorovic each had six kills in the third, while Van Orden provided eight digs and 12 assists. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .244 to .194.

The fourth set was the same as the previous three, with the home team jumping out to an early 10-6 advantage. UCLA squared the score with four in a row on two consecutive kills by McGraw and two in a row by Todorovic, but the Golden Bears responded with an 8-2 run to go ahead 18-12. The Bruins tried to get back in it with six of the next eight points to cut their deficit to 20-18. Kidder and McGraw each had two kills during the run. But Cal netted five of the last six points of the set to win it 25-19. McGraw had six kills in the fourth, while Kidder and Todorovic posted three each. The Bears out-hit the Bruins .344 to .190.

To continue the theme, the Golden Bears recorded six of the first seven points of the fifth set. Cal still led 7-2, but during a great serving run by Norton, the Bruins scored six in a row to take an 8-7 lead. The run began with a kill and a solo block by Camp, which was followed by a kill from McGraw. Norton, who also had a few great digs during the run, then served an ace, while a McGraw kill tied things at seven. A Cal attack error would give the Bruins an 8-7 advantage. The Bears responded with two in a row to go back up 9-8, and following a McGraw kill, scored consecutive points to take an 11-9 lead.

Cal still held a 13-11 edge, but back-to-back kills from Kidder evened the score at 13. The Bears sided out to earn match point, but another kill by Kidder made it 14-all. Cal sided out again for a second match point and this time converted to record a 16-14 victory. Kidder and McGraw each had four kills in the deciding set. The Bears out-hit the Bruins .160 to .087.

The Bruins return home to face the Arizona schools next weekend in a pair of matches that will be played at Collins Court in the Wooden Center. UCLA hosts Arizona State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Arizona on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both contests will feature Gametracker and live audio on UCLABruins.com.
