UCLA Signs Seven Players in Men's Volleyball

Nov. 30, 2012

Head Men's Volleyball Coach John Speraw announced the signing of seven players to National Letters of Intent this week.

Expected to enroll at UCLA in the Fall of 2013 are Jackson Bantle (Loyola High School, Los Angeles, CA), Grant Chalmers (Mira Costa High, Manhattan Beach, CA), Michael Fisher (Hawai'i Baptist Academy, Honolulu, HI), Oliver Martin (Calabasas High, Calabasas, CA), Jake Reeves (Torrey Pines High, LaJolla, CA), Hagen Smith (Loyola HS) and Mitch Stahl (Chambersburg High, Chambersburg, PA).

"We're very pleased with our first class of student-athletes," said Speraw. "I feel that we've filled all of our needs for next year and the future. All of these players are solid students and fine young men. Our staff did a great job recruiting this group."

Bantle, a 6-3 opposite from Pacific Palisades, is a veteran club and USA beach player, who earned 26 medals in AAU and California Beach Volleyball Assn. tournaments. At Loyola High School, he helped lead the Cubs to a runner-up finish at the 2012 CIF Division I Championship after they captured the Southern California Regional Championship and won the Best of the West Tournament. An Honors student, Bantle boasts a 3.7 cumulative grade point average.

Chalmers is a 6-4 left-hander from Manhattan Beach, who can play opposite, setter and libero. Last season, the Mustangs won the CIF Division I Regional title and the State Division II championship. As the starting opposite, he led Quicksilver Volleyball Club to the 2012 U-17 Junior Olympics Open Division gold medal.

Fisher, a 6-6 outside hitter from Honolulu, HI, is a four-year varsity starter for his prep team. He has earned Hawai'i State High School Division II Player of the Year and ILH Division II POY honors three times.

Martin, a 6-10 middle blocker from Woodland Hills, CA, was selected for the 2012 USA Youth National Indoor and Beach Training Teams after earning First-Team All Marmonte League honors.

Reeves is a 6-5 setter from Cardiff by the Sea, CA, who is the son of Jeanne (Beauprey) Reeves, a 1982 UCLA women's volleyball All-American and the brother of current UCLA women's volleyball outside hitter Kelly Reeves. Jake is a three-time All-CIF and all-league performer, who was Torrey Pines' 2012 volleyball MVP. He also earned AP Scholar honors last year.

Smith is a 6-1 setter/libero from Pacific Palisades and a teammate of Bantle's. On the club circuit, his team won the 2012 SCVA 17s Boys Invitational and he earned first-team 17s SCVR All-Southern California honors as a libero. He is the oldest son of UCLA Athletics Hall of Famer Sinjin Smith, who ranks first all-time with 122 beach doubles victories with partner Randy Stoklos.

Stahl is a 6-8 middle blocker from Chambersburg, PA, who led his team to the state championship in 2012 and earned Pennsylvania State MVP honors. He currently holds the Chambersburg HS kills record of more than 1,000 career kills. Also a two-year basketball letterman, he led his team to a district championship and earned co-player of the game honors in the finals.
