Dave Fleming is entering his fourth season as a member of the Bruin coaching staff. During his first three years the Bruins have compiled a record of 65-32 (.670), appeared in NCAA Tournament all three years with two appearances in the "Elite Eight."
Fleming's primary duties are as defensive coordinator and the position coach for the outside hitters. Last year, the Bruins' Defense was first in the Pac-10 with an average of 17.38 digs per game. Fleming also oversees Sideout Bruins, the fundraising arm of UCLA Women's Volleyball, and is responsible for all sports technology, including digital video editing, and statistical analysis. He plays a major role in recruiting and assists with equipment management.
Prior to his arrival at UCLA, Fleming was on the coaching staff for the Women's National Team (USA Volleyball) from 1994 through the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The 1995 team won the gold medal at the World Grand Prix, the first gold medal ever won by a USA Women's team in major international competition. During his tenure with the national team he coached former Bruins Elaine Youngs, Natalie Williams and Samantha Shaver.
Following the 1996 Olympics, Fleming served for five years as the Client Services Manager and System Integrator for ARK Sports Technologies, a San Diego-based firm that provides digital video and statistical systems to sports organizations. Fleming initiated the Customer Service and System Integration Department for ARK.
Like head coach Andy Banachowski, Fleming started coaching women's volleyball during his collegiate days, serving as an Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach (1990-92) while a student at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, then as a Volunteer Assistant (1992-94) at the University of Michigan.
Other valuable coaching experience includes coaching for the San Diego Volleyball Club from1994-2001, Head Coach for Valhalla High School from 1997-1998, where he earned conference Coach of the Year honors and Valhalla won the Grossmont South conference during his first year. In addition to UCLA, Fleming is currently on staff with Sports Shack Volleyball Club of Santa Monica.
Fleming is a 1992 graduate of Denison with a Bachelors of Arts degree in geology and a minor in physical education. Fleming was a starting singles and doubles players for the nationally ranked Big Red men's tennis team and a starting outside hitter for the club volleyball team. In 1994 he earned a masters degree in kinesiology, with an emphasis in sports management from the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Fleming was a starter on the men's club volleyball team and served as an intern in the Wolverine sports information department. Fleming currently resides in Los Angeles with Fran, his wife of seven years and their four-year-old daughter, Sarah.
