UCLA Baseball in Summer Leagues

UCLA sophomore pitcher Cody Poteet and incoming freshman Brett Stephens have each been selected to compete in the 2013 West Coast League All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 23, at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, Canada.

Both players will play for the North Division Team.

Poteet has started two games for the Walla Walla Sweets, posting a 1-0 record with a 4.62 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 11.2 innings pitched. The right-hander from Bonita, Calif. earned WCL Player of the Week honors last week after striking out 11 and tossing seven scoreless innings against the Klamath Falls Gems. Poteet served as the Tuesday starter for UCLA during its 2013 national championship season, going 4-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 70.2 innings. He fanned 56 batters in 29 appearances (11 starts) and held opposing batters to a .227 average against him.

Stephens, an outfielder from Moraga, Calif., will enter UCLA this fall after a four-year career at Campolindo High School. He earned first-team ESPN All-State underclass honors in 2012 and led Campolindo to three straight NCS Division II baseball titles (2010-12). Stephens also played at quaterback for the football team at Campolindo, leading the school to the 2011 NCS Division III championship and a runner-up finish in the Division III State Championship. This summer, he has played in 28 games for the Wenatchee AppleSox, batting .307 with two home runs, 16 runs, 13 RBI and seven stolen bases.
