UCLA Baseball Summer League Recap | UCLA Baseball on Facebook

Sophomore right-hander Cody Poteet and incoming freshman Brett Stephens were each named to the All-West Coast League team today. Stephens was a second-team selection while Poteet received honorable mention accolades.

Stephens, an outfielder from Moraga, Calif., competed for the Wenatchee AppleSox over the summer, batting .326 in 48 games for the club. His .326 average was the 11th-highest batting average in the West Coast League. Additionally, Stephens recorded 25 runs, 13 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 23 RBI and 10 stolen bases and was selected to play in the WCL All-Star Game.

In high school, he earned first-team ESPN All-State underclass honors in 2012 and led Campolindo to three straight NCS Division II baseball titles (2010-12). Stephens also played at quaterback for the football team at Campolindo, leading the school to the 2011 NCS Division III championship and a runner-up finish in the Division III State Championship.

Poteet made six starts for the Walla Walla Sweets, going 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA. The sophomore from Bonita, Calif. also fanned 27 batters in 38 innings pitched. Like Stephens, Poteet competed in the West Coast League All-Star Game and was voted the All-Star Game’s top prospect by MLB scouts. His best performance came on July 5, where he threw seven scoreless innings and struck out 11 in a 5-0 win over the Klamath Falls Gems, earning WCL Player of the Week Honors.

Poteet served as the Tuesday starter for UCLA during its 2013 national championship season, going 4-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 70.2 innings. He struck out 56 batters in 29 appearances (11 starts) and held opposing batters to a .227 average against him.
