Poteet and Kaprielian Named Top Summer League Prospects

UCLA sophomore pitchers James Kaprielian and Cody Poteet have been named to the Baseball America Top Summer College League Prospects list, as announced by the publication today.

Poteet was named the top prospect from the West Coast League while Kaprielian was named the third-best prospect from the prestigious Cape Cod League.

Poteet made six starts for the Walla Walla Sweets of the West Coast League, going 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA. The sophomore from Bonita, Calif. fanned 27 batters in 38 innings pitched. Poteet also competed in the West Coast League All-Star Game and was voted the All-Star Game’s top prospect by MLB scouts. His best performance came on July 5, where he threw seven scoreless innings and struck out 11 in a 5-0 win over the Klamath Falls Gems, earning WCL Player of the Week Honors. Additionally, Poteet received All-West Coast League honorable mention accolades.

Poteet served as the Tuesday starter for UCLA during its 2013 national championship season, going 4-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 70.2 innings. He struck out 56 batters in 29 appearances (11 starts) and held opposing batters to a .227 average against him.

Kaprielian appeared in five games for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League, making three starts. He logged a 1.80 ERA in 20 innings pitched, recording 28 strikeouts, and competed in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game. In the Cape Cod League playoffs, he started one game, striking out nine batters in five innings in a no-decision.

Kaprielian posted a 1.55 ERA in 34 relief appearances this past season for UCLA, serving primarily as a setup man in the Bruins' bullpen. He recorded two saves while giving up just seven earned runs in 40.2 innings, earning freshman All-America honors from Perfect Game USA and Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball. Additionally, Kaprielian struck out 53 batters and allowed just a .141 batting average against him all year.
