The defending NCAA champion UCLA Baseball team welcomed eight incoming freshmen to campus on Thursday as fall quarter classes began in Westwood. Head Coach John Savage’s latest recruiting class at UCLA features three outfielders, three pitchers, one infielder and one catcher and was ranked No. 16 in the country last week by Collegiate Baseball.
“We are very excited about this class,” head coach John Savage said. “It will give us immediate depth in our outfield, as well as on the mound and behind the plate. Our coaches, particularly Coach T.J. Bruce, have done a good job of leading this class into UCLA.”
Four of the eight incoming players were selected in the 2013 MLB Draft. Right-hander Scott Burke (31st round, Houston Astros), infielder Luke Persico (37th round, Colorado Rockies), outfielder Andrew Schmidt (38th round, New York Yankees) and catcher Dominic Miroglio (40th round, Oakland Athletics) were all taken in the June MLB Draft.
Other key additions for the Bruins include right-handers Grant Dyer (Dana Hills HS) and Moises Ceja (Kennedy HS), and outfielders Kort Peterson (St. Francis HS) and Brett Stephens (Campolindo HS).
Seven of the eight newcomers are from California, with Schmidt (Parker, Colo.) being the only one from out-of-state.
