Zeile’s 11th Inning Double Gives UCLA 4-3 Walkoff Win over Portland
By: UCLA Athletics

Junior Shane Zeile smacked a double down the left field line to score senior Brian Carroll in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the 12th-ranked UCLA Baseball team a 4-3 walkoff victory over the Portland Pilots on Sunday.

Junior David Berg earned his first win of the season for the Bruins, tossing four scoreless innings in relief. Colin Feldtman took the loss for the Pilots. Sophomore Cody Poteet started the game for UCLA, pitching 4.1 innings in a no-decision. Poteet struck out three and allowed one earned run in his 4.1 innings of work.

After a quiet first two innings, Portland took the lead in the top of the third, starting when Poteet hit Bo Cornish with a pitch. Cornish then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a wild pitch. Eventually Cornish came home on a sacrifice fly by Cody Lenahan, giving the Pilots the lead.

The Bruins responded with two in the bottom of the half of the inning though to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Christoph Bono led off with a double, and two batters later came around on a single up the middle by Carroll. Freshman Brett Stephens singled to left in the next at-bat, putting runners on first and second for sophomore Ty Moore. Moore came through by ripping a single to right, scoring Carroll to make it 2-1 in favor of the Bruins.

UCLA tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth as well to increase its lead to 3-1. After Bono got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, he came around from first on a double by sophomore Trent Chatterton to give the Bruins a two-run lead.

Poteet ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with only one out. Junior Max Schuh relieved Poteet at that point and got Lenahan to fly out to center. On the same play, Carroll made a terrific play, throwing out Grant Taylor at third before the runner on third came home to score, ending the inning and keeping the Pilots off the board.

Portland would find the tying runs though in the top of the seventh, when with two outs and freshman Nick Kern on the mound, Taylor drew a walk. The next batter was Cornish, who doubled off the wall in left to score Taylor, making it 3-2 Bruins. Chet Thompson stepped in one batter later and chopped a single to the right side, allowing Cornish to score to tie the game. From there, neither team could score in the final two innings and the game went to extra innings.

In the bottom of the 11th, Carroll led off with a single to right. Sophomore Brett Urabe sacrificed him over to second and after an intentional walk to Moore, Zeile stepped in. On the first pitch, he crushed a double down the left field line to bring home Carroll and hand the Bruins the series victory.

Overall, Moore led the Bruins at the plate, going 4-4 with a RBI. Carroll followed that up with a 2-5 performance that included two runs and a RBI while Chatterton and Zeile each had two hits and a RBI apiece.

The Bruins (2-1) will continue their homestand this Tuesday as they will square off against the Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-1) at 6 p.m. out at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Game Notes: David Berg matched a career-high with his four innings tonight, marking the fourth time he has done that in his career...Berg’s win tonight moved his career record to 13-3 while he lowered his career ERA to 1.15…tonight was also Berg’s 103rd career appearance…Moore’s four hits were a new career-high for the sophomore…UCLA’s bullpen this weekend combined to allow just two runs in 12.2 innings pitched…Brian Carroll went 5-11 in the series, scoring three runs and recording a double and a RBI…UCLA has now won its last six extra inning games dating back to last year…the Bruins have not allowed more than three runs in a ballgame in their last 11 games.
