Junior left-hander Grant Watson has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for March 10-16, as announced by Conference office on Tuesday.
Watson led the Bruins to a 3-1 victory over California on Saturday night to help the Bruins clinch the series over the Golden Bears. He was phenomenal on the mound, earning his third win of the year by giving up just one run on two hits in eight innings of work. Watson also struck out four batters on the evening. Additionally, he retired 16 straight batters from the end of the second inning to the start of the eighth inning and allowed just two California base runners through the first seven. With the win, Watson improved his career record as a starter to 21-5 and in his last three starts he has pitched a combined 22 innings while posting a 0.82 ERA.
This marks Watson’s second-career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod with the first one coming during his freshman year in 2012. This is also the second time this season that a UCLA pitcher has earned Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, as Cody Poteet received the award after his 13-strikeout performance against Michigan on March 2. Overall, this is the 66th pitcher honoree for the Bruins.
The Bruins (12-7, 3-0 Pac-12) return to action this weekend as they square off against Washington State (6-9, 2-1 Pac-12) in a three-game series at Jackie Robinson Stadium from Friday, March 21 to Sunday, March 23. Game times are 6 p.m., 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
