No. 25 UCLA Baseball Gets Series Sweep with 6-1 Win at California
By: UCLA Athletics

The 25th-ranked UCLA Baseball team earned a series sweep of the California Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon, earning a 6-1 victory over California at Evans Diamond.

Sophomore Cody Poteet picked up his second win of the year for the Bruins with seven strong innings on the mound. Poteet allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four. Michael Theofanopoulos took the loss for California after lasting just two innings and giving up three runs (two earned).

California once again took the early lead in the bottom of the first, as Derek Campbell hit a solo home run off of Poteet with one out to put the Golden Bears on top 1-0. As has been the case all series though, the Bruins came back by scoring three runs in the top of the third. After seniors Pat Gallagher and Brian Carroll led off the frame with back-to-back singles, sophomore Christoph Bono stepped in and laced a double to left-center, scoring Gallagher to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Shane Zeile then came to bat and hit an infield single to short, allowing Carroll to come home and giving UCLA a 2-1 advantage. A sacrifice fly by freshman Luke Persico would bring Bono in and the Bruins took a 3-1 lead to the bottom of the third.

Poteet would make that lead hold up, holding the Golden Bears scoreless for the next four innings. The Bruins then added another run in the bottom of the seventh with some help from the California defense. Bono singled to lead off the frame and eventually moved to third with two outs. Persico then hit a chopper to Chris Paul at third. Paul’s throw bounced and got away from John Soteropulos at first, which allowed Bono to score and increase UCLA’s lead to three.

UCLA tacked on another run in the top of eighth as Carroll drew a bases loaded walk off of Dylan Nelson to make it 5-1 in favor of the Bruins. Senior Kevin Williams then scored sophomore Ty Moore with a single to center in the ninth to give UCLA a comfortable 6-1 lead.

Freshman Nick Kern and junior David Berg would go on to pitch scoreless eighth and ninth innings and UCLA went on to earn the sweep with a 6-1 victory.

Bono, Persico and junior Chris Keck each logged two hits apiece to lead the Bruins. Bono scored two runs and a RBI as well while Persico and Keck recorded a RBI and a run scored respectively. Finally, Carroll scored a run and drove in a run as well.

UCLA (12-7, 3-0 Pac-12) will return to action next weekend as the Bruins continue Pac-12 play against Washington State (6-9, 2-1 Pac-12) in a three-game series at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m., 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
