The No. 21 UCLA Baseball team was defeated by Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 4-0 decision to the Dirtbags at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Josh Frye earned the win for the Dirtbags to improve to 1-0. Frye tossed seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits while striking out five and walking two. Junior Grant Watson suffered the loss for UCLA, dropping to 4-3 on the year. Watson surrendered three runs on eight hits in six innings of work, striking out six and walking two. Ryan Millison earned his first save of the year for Long Beach with two scoreless innings in relief.

The Dirtbags struck first in the top of the first with two runs off of Watson. Johnny Bekakis and Garrett Hampson led off the frame with back-to-back singles before Ino Patron reached on an error by Watson to load the bases. Richard Prigatano hit a single through the left side on the next at-bat, scoring Bekakis and Hampson to give the Dirtbags a two-run lead. Watson did well to limit the damage though, holding Long Beach State to two by retiring the next three batters.

Watson held the Dirtbags scoreless for the next three innings before the Bruins threatened in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Shane Zeile and sophomore Ty Moore reached on a walk and a hit by pitch respectively to put runners at first and second with one out. However, freshman Luke Persico struck out and sophomore Christoph Bono grounded out to end the inning. Long Beach State then added a run in the top of the fifth as Alex Bishop scored Prigatano from third with a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0 Dirtbags.

UCLA continued to battle and again threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Persico singled to lead off the inning, eventually moving to third on a passed ball and a groundout. Junior Chris Keck got hit by a pitch to put runners at first and third with one out, but Frye struck out sophomore Trent Chatterton and got senior Pat Gallagher to fly out to end the inning.

The Dirtbags tacked on another run in the top of the ninth when Prigatano singled home Hampson from second to make it 4-0 Long Beach. UCLA was unable to get any runs across in the bottom of the ninth and the Bruins fell to the Dirtbags by a score of 4-0.

Zeile, Persico and Keck provided the hits for UCLA while Prigatano led Long Beach State with a 3-4 game that included three RBI.

UCLA (18-11) and Long Beach State (14-15) will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. down at Blair Field in Long Beach. Sophomore Cody Poteet (2-1) will take the hill for the Bruins.

Game Notes: UCLA has now had at least one batter get hit by a pitch in nine straight games and has had 24 total batters get hit in those nine games…with his scoreless inning of relief today, Max Schuh has now not allowed a run in his last 10 appearances…Grant Dyer lowered his season ERA to 2.13 with his scoreless inning in relief…Shane Zeile has now reached base safely in 12 of his last 13 games.
