UCLA Baseball Shuts Out Loyola Marymount, 3-0, in Tuesday Matchup
By: UCLA Athletics

The UCLA Baseball team returned from its eight-game road trip in style on Tuesday night, shutting out the Loyola Marymount Lions, 3-0, at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Freshman Grant Dyer (6-3) earned the win for the Bruins with six shutout innings on the mound. Dyer scattered four hits in his six innings of work, striking out two. Brenton Arriaga (3-3) suffered the loss for the Lions, allowing two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Freshman Nick Kern picked up his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

In the top of the second, Loyola Marymount had a runner on first with Jimmy Jack at the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Jack hit a double to left and Cole Trezek attempted to score from first. However, freshman Brett Stephens gathered the ball quickly and fired it in to the cutoff man, Brett Urabe. Urabe then threw the ball home to junior Shane Zeile who awaited Trezek with the tag to get the final out of the inning.

The Lions threatened again in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out via two walks and a single. However, Dyer managed to work out of it, getting back-to-back strikeouts of Cassidy Brown and Ted Boeke to leave the bases loaded and keep the game scoreless.

The Bruins would finally take the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run off of Arriaga. After sophomore Trent Chatterton led off the inning with a double to left, senior Pat Gallagher brought him home on the next at-bat with a single to left-center, making it 1-0 UCLA. The Lions again threatened in the top of the sixth, putting runners on first and third with one out against Dyer. Yet again the freshman worked his way out of it though, getting a pop up in foul territory and a fly out with the bases loaded to escape the inning unscathed.

UCLA rewarded Dyer’s efforts with an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, senior Kevin Williams and sophomore Christoph Bono hit back-to-back singles with to put runners on the corner. That brought up Chatterton, who hit a soft grounder to the right side that brought home Williams, giving the Bruins a two-run lead.

After sophomore Jake Ehret and junior Max Schuh tossed scoreless seventh and eighth innings respectively, the Bruins tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Zeile and Williams hit back-to-back doubles off of Patrick McGrath to give UCLA a three-run cushion. Kern then finished the game out with a clean ninth inning and UCLA went home with the 3-0 win.

Zeile and Williams led the way at the plate with each going 2-4 with a run. Williams added a RBI as well. In addition, Chatterton went 1-3 with a double, a run and a RBI while Gallagher recorded a RBI.

UCLA (22-16, 9-6 Pac-12) will return to Pac-12 play this weekend as the Bruins host crosstown rivals USC (21-17, 9-9 Pac-12) in a three-game series from Thursday, April 24 to Saturday, April 26 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
