Shane Zeile and Max Schuh Selected on Day Two of the MLB Draft
By: UCLA Athletics

Two UCLA ballplayers were selected on day two of the 2014 MLB Draft, as catcher Shane Zeile was chosen in the fifth round (No. 160 overall) by the Detroit Tigers and left-hander Max Schuh was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh round (No. 211 overall).

Zeile is the first UCLA player to be drafted by the Tigers since infielder Alden Carrithers was selected by Detroit in the 15th round of the 2008 MLB Draft. Zeile's uncle, Todd, was drafted in the second round of the 1986 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals before enjoying a 16-year career in the Major Leagues. Schuh is the first UCLA player to be taken by the Orioles since pitcher Dan Klein was selected by the club in the third round of the 2010 Draft.

Shane Zeile, who was the first UCLA player taken in the 2014 MLB Draft, started all 56 games for the Bruins this past season on his way to earning All-Pac-12 honors. He batted a team-leading .324 with 25 runs, nine doubles, three triples, two home runs, 28 RBI and five stolen bases, leading the team in hits (70), slugging percentage (.421), on-base percentage (.401), RBI (28) and walks (21, tied with Trent Chatterton) as well. Zeile also had a team-high 21 multi-hit games and recorded five multi-RBI games, all while logging at least one hit in 42 of his 56 games played. Finally, Zeile was named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given out to the top collegiate catcher, and behind the plate he threw out 18 of 43 attempted base stealers, tied for the most in the Pac-12.

Schuh, a native of Fresno, Calif., appeared in a Pac-12 leading 37 games in 2014, all in relief. He posted an 0-1 record with a 1.55 ERA in 29 innings pitched, striking out 34 batters as well. Schuh also did not allow an earned run for 22 consecutive appearances from March 7 to April 29 of this season. In his two-year UCLA Baseball career, he has made 49 relief appearances, posting a 1.44 ERA and 36 strikeouts.

UCLA also had four signees get selected in the first two days of the draft. Yesterday, left-handed pitcher Brady Aiken (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) was selected No. 1 overall by the Houston Astros while right-handed pitcher Grant Hockin (Pomona, Calif./Damien HS) was taken No. 61 overall in the second round by the Cleveland Indians. Infielder Josh Morgan (Corona, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) and right-handed pitcher Jacob Nix (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) were drafted in the third round by the Texas Rangers and the fifth round by the Houston Astros respectively during today's rounds.

In 10 seasons as UCLA's head coach, John Savage has now produced 67 MLB Draft selections, including 25 players being drafted within the first 10 rounds.

The 2014 MLB Draft will conclude tomorrow with Rounds 11-40 beginning at 10 a.m. PT.
