UCLA Ballplayers Conclude Successful Summer League Action

LOS ANGELES - UCLA’s baseball players had successful summers competing in collegiate leagues around the nation. Spanning from leagues in New England (Cape Cod League) to the Upper Midwest (Northwoods League) and the Northwest (West Coast League), returning veterans and incoming freshmen had the opportunity to improve their baseball skills away from Los Angeles.

Junior right-hander James Kaprielian had the unique opportunity to compete for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, which played 28 games in the United States, the Netherlands and in Cuba. Kaprielian went 3-1 with a 1.07 ERA in five starts for Team USA, which went 7-1 at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands to win the tournament title.

Sophomore right-hander Moises Ceja helped the Bellingham Bells win the 2014 West Coast League Championship. Ceja, who went 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA in 17 relief appearances, competed for a Bellingham squad that posted a league-leading 37-17 record during the summer in the West Coast League’s West Division.

Sophomore right-hander Chase Radan registered a 2.90 ERA in 11 relief appearances for the Lakeshore Chinooks, which captured the 2014 Northwoods League Championship. Radan finished his summer with 19 strikeouts and six walks in 21.2 innings, helping the Chinooks post a league-best 50-21 record in the Northwoods League.

Walla Walla Sweets (West Coast League)

Surrendered 14 runs (12 earned) and 11 hits in 7.0 innings … pitched in eight games for Walla Walla, which concluded the summer going 28-26 with a third place finish in the West Coast League’s East Division.

Sean Bouchard
Freshman, INF
Walla Walla Sweets (West Coast League)

Batted .283 in 35 games for Walla Walla … hit three home runs, one triple and six doubles … totaled 26 RBI and scored 19 runs … Walla Walla went 28-26 overall, finishing third in the West Coast League’s East Division.

Scott Burke
Sophomore, RHP
La Crosse Loggers (Northwoods League)

Went 1-4 with a 6.46 ERA in eight games (five starts) for La Crosse … allowed 28 runs (23 earned) and 40 hits in 32.0 innings … La Crosse finished the summer with a 33-39 record in the Northwoods League’s East Division.

Wenatchee AppleSox (West Coast League)

Went 1-1 with a 1.61 ERA in five games (four starts) for Wenatchee … allowed five runs (four earned) and 18 hits in 22.2 innings … registered 27 strikeouts and three walks … Wenatchee concluded the summer with a 30-24 record and second-place finish in the West Coast League’s East Division.

Trent Chatterton
Junior, INF
Duluth Huskies (Northwoods League)

Batted .271 in 43 games for Duluth … hit one home run and six doubles, while totaling 22 RBI and 26 runs … Duluth finished the summer 30-42 in the Northwoods League’s North Division.

Went 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA in 17 relief appearances for Bellingham … allowed nine runs (eight earned) and 20 hits in 23.2 innings … recorded two saves … had 15 strikeouts and 10 walks … Bellingham captured the 2014 West Coast League Championship … Bellingham posted a league-leading 37-17 record in the West Coast League (West Division).

Zander Clark

Conejo Oaks (California League)

Batted .264 in 28 games for Conejo … totaled two home runs, one triple and four doubles … also had 13 RBI and 11 runs … Conejo posted a 14-23 overall record, competing in the California League’s Central Division.

Tucker Forbes

San Luis Obispo Blues (California League)

Made 11 relief appearances and posted a 1.33 ERA for San Luis Obispo (did not record a decision) … totaled 20 strikeouts and five walks … surrendered three runs and 17 hits … San Luis Obispo concluded the summer with a 29-11 overall record, competing in the California League’s Central Division.

Wenatchee AppleSox

Went 3-1 with a 5.66 ERA in 12 relief appearances … recorded 26 strikeouts and 15 walks … surrendered 18 runs (17 earned) and 29 hits in 27.0 innings … Wenatchee concluded the summer with a 30-24 record and second-place finish in the West Coast League's East Division.

Valley Blue Sox (New England Collegiate League)

Opened the summer playing in nine games for the Brewster Whitecaps and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod League, where he batted .278 with two doubles, three runs and one RBI … concluded the summer batting .221 in 21 games for the Valley Blue Sox of the New England Collegiate League … had three doubles, four RBI and three runs scored for Valley.

James Kaprielian

USA Collegiate National Team

Went 3-1 with a 1.07 ERA in five starts for the USA Collegiate National Team … recorded 29 strikeouts and seven walks in 25.1 innings … limited the opposition to a .149 batting average … tied for the team lead in wins (3) and ranked third on the staff with 25.1 innings … Team USA concluded its summer with an 18-8-2 record, including a 7-1 mark at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands where the team won the tournament title.

Yakima Valley Pippins (West Coast League)

Went 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 12 relief appearances for Yakima Valley … totaled six saves, while recording 26 strikeouts and four walks … Yakima Valley went 35-19 overall, finishing in first place in the West Coast League’s East Division.

Ty Moore

Chatham Anglers (Cape Cod League)

Led the Chatham Anglers with a .323 batting average in 39 games … hit two home runs, one triple and seven doubles … also recorded 20 RBI and 25 runs … was selected to play in the 2014 Cape Cod League All-Star Game … Chatham went 17-26-1 overall in the Cape Cod League’s East Division.

Luke Persico

La Crosse Loggers (Northwoods League)

Batted .250 in 35 games for La Crosse … totaled four home runs, one triple and two doubles … also had 22 RBI and 21 runs … La Crosse finished the summer with a 33-39 record in the Northwoods League’s East Division.

Went 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA in seven starts for Yarmouth-Dennis … totaled a team-leading 43 strikeouts and issued 11 walks … ranked second on the team in wins (4) and innings pitched (40.2) … allowed 16 runs (14 earned) and 36 hits … Yarmouth-Dennis concluded the summer with a 24-19-1 record, finishing third in the Cape Cod League’s East Division.
