MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - UCLA's Jeff Gelalich, Scott Griggs, Tyler Heineman and Adam Plutko have earned ABCA Rawlings All-West Region honors, as announced this week by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Gelalich, Griggs and Heineman captured first-team honors, while Plutko secured second-team acclaim.
In addition, center fielder Beau Amaral was one of nine players in the nation to earn NCAA Division I Rawlings Gold Glove Team honors. Amaral was one of three outfielders, along with Stony Brook's Travis Jankowski and Buffalo's Jason Kazler, named a Gold Glove Team selection.
Gelalich led UCLA with a .351 batting average and 11 home runs in all 64 games. He was named a first-team All-America selection by Baseball America and a second-team honoree by Perfect Game USA. Gelalich was selected in the supplemental first round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds (No. 57 overall).
Griggs finished his junior season having established UCLA's single-season saves record. The junior from Alamo, Calif., logged 15 saves in 17 opportunities, going 3-1 with a 2.65 ERA in 36 games. Griggs recorded 64 strikeouts and 31 walks in 37.1 innings, limiting the opposition to a .170 batting average.
Heineman batted .332 with one home run, seven doubles, 27 RBI and 42 runs in 59 starts. The Bruins' catcher threw out 22 of 46 attempted base stealers, converting at a 47.8 percent rate. Heineman's batting average was the highest by any UCLA catcher since 2002, when Josh Arhart batted .363 as a senior.
Plutko served as the pitching staff's ace, going 12-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 18 starts. The right-hander from Upland, Calif., threw two complete games and registered 99 strikeouts and 47 walks in 119.2 innings.
Plutko finished the year going 7-0 in his final seven starts (since May 5), logging a 0.89 ERA with a .180 opposing batting average in that span. He became the second pitcher in school history to have compiled at least four career postseason victories, tying a record previously established by Trevor Bauer.
Amaral posted a .989 fielding percentage, committing just two errors in 190 chances. He registered six outfield assists, in addition to batting .313 with four home runs, five triples, 10 doubles and a team-leading 63 runs.
The ABCA West Regional teams are nominated and selected by the 38 West Regional Division I coaches. The NCAA Division I Gold Glove Team is chosen by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
UCLA went 48-16 in 2012, advancing to the College World Series for the second time in three seasons. The Bruins won the Pac-12 Conference title for the second consecutive year.
