Three UCLA Players Earn Perfect Game USA All-America Honors

June 25, 2012

OMAHA, Neb. - UCLA's Jeff Gelalich has secured second-team All-America honors from Perfect Game USA, while Adam Plutko and David Berg have captured third-team accolades, the national publication announced Monday.

Gelalich was honored as a first-team All-America selection by Baseball America last week. The junior from La Verne, Calif., led UCLA with a .351 batting average and 11 home runs in all 64 games. Gelalich was selected in the supplental first round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds (No. 57 overall).

Plutko served as the pitching staff's ace, going 12-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 18 starts. The right-hander from Upland, Calif., threw two complete games and registered 99 strikeouts and 47 walks in 119.2 innings.

Plutko finished the year going 7-0 in his final seven starts (since May 5), logging a 0.89 ERA with a .180 opposing batting average in that span. He became the second pitcher in school history to have compiled at least four career postseason victories, tying a record previously established by Trevor Bauer.

Berg set the UCLA and Pac-12 record for single-season appearances, pitching in 50 games. He led all Pac-12 pitchers with a 1.46 ERA and .165 opposing batting average, going 5-3 with one save in 74.0 innings (all in relief).

Berg logged 63 strikeouts and 17 walks in 50 games, tied for the second-highest appearances in the NCAA Division I single-season record book.

UCLA went 48-16 in 2012, advancing to the College World Series for the second time in three seasons. The Bruins won the Pac-12 Conference title for the second consecutive year.
