Durham, N.C. - UCLA sophomore relief pitcher David Berg has been selected to compete for the 2013 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer, as announced by USA Baseball on Friday afternoon.

This is the second consecutive year that Berg has been named to the squad after playing for the U.S. Collegiate National Team in the summer of 2012. Berg posted a 3.72 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched for the Collegiate National Team last year, recording two saves as well. Along with fellow UCLA pitcher Adam Plutko, Berg helped lead the U.S. to a third-place finish at the 2012 Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Week in Haarlem, Netherlands.

"I am excited and honored by the opportunity to play for team USA again this summer," Berg said. "Last year was an incredible experience and I look forward to another memorable summer with the team."

This is the seventh UCLA selection to the Collegiate National Team in the last five years and the eighth selection under head coach John Savage. Berg is just fourth UCLA player all-time to compete for the Collegiate National Team in two different years, joining Gerrit Cole (2009-10), Josh Karp (1999-2000) and Troy Glaus (1995-96). This is also the 17th time that UCLA Baseball has sent a player to play for the USA Baseball National Team.

"We are very excited to hear that David has been selected to Team USA for the second straight summer," said Savage. "He has been as good as any reliever in the country over the last two years and continues to be a major contributor in our program."

The Covina, Calif. native has enjoyed an outstanding sophomore season at UCLA, leading the nation with a 0.58 ERA while posting a record of 6-0 with 17 saves. Berg's 17 saves are also a new UCLA single-season record and he is just three saves shy of matching the school's all-time career saves record. Additionally, he has allowed the fewest runs (4), walks (7) and hits (40) in the Pac-12 while appearing in the most games in the conference (39). Berg has also not allowed a run in his last 35.2 innings of work, the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak in the nation this season. Finally, Berg has been named a semifinalist for the NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy and earlier this season was selected to the National Pitcher of the Year watch list.

As a freshman, Berg posted the school's fourth-lowest single-season ERA (1.46) and shattered UCLA's single-season appearances record with 50 appearances, which was one shy of the NCAA Division I record.

The 2013 Collegiate National Team will be coached by TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle. The team's assistant coaches include Tim Esmay (head coach at Arizona State), Mike Bianco (head coach at Mississippi) and Ed Servais (head coach at Creighton).

Other college players who have accepted selection to the 2013 Collegiate National Team include Tyler Beede (Vanderbilt), Alex Bregman (LSU), Nick Burdi (Louisville), Ryan Burr (Arizona State), Michael Conforto (Oregon State), Austin Cousino (Kentucky), Brandon Finnegan (TCU), Grayson Greiner (South Carolina), Aaron Nola (LSU), Carolos Rodon (North Carolina State) and Trea Turner (North Carolina State).
