Progressive Legends Classic (at Barclays Center)
UCLA 60, Georgia 56 - November 20, 2012
UCLA Head Coach Ben Howland
on the game
"We got off to a really shaky start at the beginning of the game. We had to fire our way out of a hole and it was at both ends of the floor. We did a poor job on post-defense. One day preparation for guys that are still learning to play man-defense for the first time at this level. It was very difficult today and I thought our zone really helped us. We haven't practiced the zone much but it was critical for us to get back into the game. To only be down four at half-time (was critical) and we got off to a great start in the second-half and both these kids did a good job for us and it was obviously an important bounce back win after a disappointing defeat last night."
on freshman Shabazz Muhammad
"I think he was more comfortable tonight and we are learning how to play with Shabazz for the first time. We didn't play with him all summer and then the same thing in a game situation until just yesterday, so it's going to take some time but I thought he did a really good job, especially getting to the line, getting fouls, attacking the basket, running the floor and obviously he still has to work to become a better defender, but as do all our players."
on the importance of the win
"It was very important tonight that we got the `w' and it would have been a long plane ride home to come out of this trip 0-2. That was critical for us and most of all we have a lot of work to do and a lot of growth to make and I am confident we will. We're going to work really hard...It felt really good to get the `w' after the sting of defeat last night."
UCLA freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad
on his performancr
"I thought I was getting more comfortable out there and I am definitely looking to build more chemistry with the team and really getting my defensive game going as well as my offense. Like coach said, I am trying to mesh with the team and this has been my first time playing with them. So it was a great opportunity to get out there and play with them."
on playing in Brooklyn
"Brooklyn was a really exciting tournament to play in. We got a lot of experience coming out here and playing two really good basketball teams (Georgetown and Georgia). It was a great experience for us and I think it is really going to help us in our future games."
UCLA freshman guard Kyle Anderson
on playing in New York
"I had a lot of people come out and support between family and friends. They showed a great amount of support and I was really excited to come back to the east coast and play. I am happy we got this win but looking forward to moving on and getting better."
Georgia Head Coach Mark Fox
on the game against UCLA
"It was a really hard fought game. I thought the difference in the game was the free throw line. We didn't get there enough, they got there a bunch and they outscored us about 14 points at the foul line in a low scoring game and that was a big factor. We didn't make the plays in the heart of the game that we needed to make."
on playing against a zone defense
"We didn't play very well against the zone. But I thought we started attacking the zone better in the last few minutes. We drove it a lot and I thought we were trying to get to the bucket or to the free throw line but we just couldn't get there. But their zone was affective tonight, let's give them credit."
comparing the Bulldogs' second half play during both nights of the Progressive Legends Classic
"Similar to last night, in the gut of the game, the other team made the plays and we didn't. It's as simple as that."
on Shabazz Muhammad's performance
"He got 21 points, that's a pretty good night."
