Arizona 79, UCLA 75
January 9, 2014
UCLA head coach Steve Alford
“I thought it was really a good basketball game. Arizona is a really good defensive team. I’m proud of our guys. We were down 13 with seven minutes to go. We made some really good plays and got some good looks late. Hats off to their guys. But we’re not far off. We know that. Although this loss hurts, there’s encouragement to come out of this.”
on UCLA’s missed free throws
“That’s big. When you miss five free throws in a row and then you’re down double digits. That was a big stretch. We got a good 3-point look from our best shooter in Jordan Adams. I’m never going to complain about a good effort. We need to do a better job with some lapses defensively. We can’t do that against teams like this.
on UCLA’s next game
“The Arizona State game Sunday is huge. We need to get to 13-3 and 2-1 going into that road trip. We’ve got to get confidence before we get on the road.”
on second-half play
“I thought we tried. I told the team that. At Missouri, we did a good job in the first half, and in the second half they made a run at us and we could never catch them. We didn’t have the same kind of intensity then. And then we played Duke in Madison Square Garden, and the last six minutes of the game we didn’t have near the fight we had tonight when we were down 13. I liked our fight tonight. I’ve seen strides in different areas from this basketball team. Our young guys played well, and we had quality minutes from the bench.”
on the atmosphere in Pauley Pavilion
“This is the best atmosphere we’ve been in to date. We really appreciate the fans. I thought the students were terrific and our overall fan base was terrific. There was volume and intensity that was good to see. The fans know this is an entertaining team. They play hard, and they play smart. We didn’t get beat by an average team because we threw the ball all over the place. We had nine turnovers. We got a lot of energy from the crowd, and that was very good.
“I thought we had great effort. Jordan [Adams] has had better shooting nights, but he had 11 rebounds. He did those other things. That’s what you want to do. When the other part of your game is off, you want to do the other things. Kyle [Anderson] had 16, 11 and six. He’s doing a lot of good things. As the defensive end picks up and makes a stronger commitment there, this team could be something really good and special.
“We had to play catchup most of the night. In the first half, in our zone we left some guys open we shouldn’t have. The guys corrected that in the second half. We’re an offensive-minded team, but there’s got to be a commitment defensively. We’re making strides, but we’ve got to get there.”
UCLA center Tony Parker
“We have to put two halves together, and I have to play a total of 40 minutes. I got seven rebounds in the first half, but I have to get more rebounds in the second half.”
UCLA guard/forward Kyle Anderson
“Being down to a very good team, we did a good job of fighting back. In previous games [losses], we kind of shut down when we were down. The other two losses were very bad losses. It wasn’t anything we did wrong down the stretch. We only got out-rebounded by one. We did all we could. We fought hard and everyone gave a great effort. The [missed] free throws were crucial. That is something that we can fix. We will get to the free-throw line in practice and fix that.”
UCLA guard Jordan Adams
“They played a full game of 40 minutes and competed at a high level the entire game. We have to look at the film and see how they guarded us. They are one of the top defensive teams in the nation.”
on his final three-point attempt
“Coach called my name and I thought the play was perfect. It looked great, but it just came up short.”
Arizona head coach Sean Miller
“This was a great victory for our team. Anytime you go on the road in the Pac-12, it’s going to be tough. But playing here in Pauley with a great crowd and a great team that they have, it was a great win. We battled through and were resilient and came out with a win. UCLA was very strong on the offensive boards tonight. We had not seen that before in their previous games. Nick Johnson guarded [Jordan] Adams the whole game and did a great job.”
Arizona guard Nick Johnson
“I am the old guy on the team and they look to me for leadership. I am conscious about being a role model because we have a very young team.”
on the last shot that the attempted
“Coach asked me what shot I wanted to take. Transition defense was really big for us. We saw what they did to USC.
“After three losses to UCLA last year I definitely had a chip on my shoulder. The unselfish nature of our team definitely starts with the point guard who had seven assists tonight. We knew that UCLA was a tough team coming into their house with the crowd all riled up. We knew that we were not going to blow them out.”
